What would you risk to fight for something that you feel is not right? As times get tough people make bold decisions to find a solution to their problems, and in Purple Hibiscus the desperation and rebellion of some has a strong consequence on the people surrounding them. Based on the dark reality of a period of struggle for Nigeria, Purple Hibiscus explains the difficult childhood of a girl, who is impacted by an abusive father and a corrupt government. Once leaving their house and being exposed to the reality of the real world, the main character, Kambili, and her brother, Jaja, learn that there is more to life than what their father limits them to. Once learning about the disturbing events that occurred in the final moments of Nwankiti Ogechi’s life, Ade Coker incites fear within the government, as he threatens to expose them for their brutal murder and attempt to hide the evidence. The Nigerian government pleads to Ade Coker to not release the story, as “Big Oga [is] willing give him an exclusive interview,” which can improve his career to the next level (199). Ade’s refusal of the interview illustrates his determination to continue what he believes in, which is sharing his criticisms of the realities of his immoral government. Ade Coker’s attempts to unmask the government are extremely successful, as countries place sanctions on Nigeria as a result of the horrendous matter that he shared with the world. Unfortunately, every decision made has equal consequences, as Ade Coker “[is] blown up [as] he open[s] [a] package... from the Head of State” (206). The actions from the government show their fear of rebellion from civilians, and their belief that silencing those who oppose them will solve their issues with the defiant members of the community. Ultimately, Ade Coker’s resilience against the government leads to his demise, but his persistence in spreading the truth leaves a strong legacy behind
