Scarlett’s jealously takes over and marries Charles the day before her “true love gets married with Melanie. Charles goes off to war dies of the disease measles. A little bit after the death of Charles, Scarlett gives birth to a child. She is sick of being a widow and becomes even more jealous when she sees that Ashley is happily married. There are multiple items that are very symbolic in this book, which are the mocking birds and the jays, Scarlett’s corset, and Tara. Close to the plantation house, the mocking birds and the jays quarrel with each other trying to solve a situation of whom gets to live in the magnolia tree. When Scarlett tries to put the corset on it is very difficult and she needs help from her mom to put it on. It is very difficult to be a women in this book because of how little people thought of them and that is compared to how painful it is to put on the corset: “bracing herself and catching firm hold of one of the bedposts. Mammy pulled and jerked vigorously and, as the tiny circumference of the tiny whalebone-girdled waist grew smaller, a proud, fond look came into her eyes” (Mitchell 82). The women in this book are like ants because they had to get through the hardship of how little they are in society. There is a sense of pride about being a woman in this book. Woman’s sense of pride later portrayed the fight for their equality. Woman had to be proud to be successful and that’s what this showed by even though women are discriminated against. They still had to show their will to keep and improve their place in society. Scarlett is a basic example of a women activist in this book and felt the sense of pride for being a woman. The women are strong, resilient, and proud to stick up in the face of adversity and discrimination by the society around
