Could the civil war have been avoided? Could there have been something different we could have done to avoid it? The civil war was a war between the north and the south of America. They both fight for what each side believe in. This war caused 600,000 people to die, but could it have been avoided. The Civil War could not have been avoided for two reasons which are the south and the north's sectional tension, and views on slavery were not going to change. The first reason the Civil War could not have been avoided is the south and the north had a lot of sectional tension. First of all, according to the video “how the civil war got its start,” South Carolina left the union sept. 1860 before Lincoln even took over. Also, Lincoln opposed the spread of slavery into new territories, this the south did not like. Lincoln won the electoral college, not the popular vote so the south felt it was a northern victory which increased the tension even more. This still would not have made a difference, the south was still going to have slaves and the north was still going to try to get rid of them.
