The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas is about a young man named Edmond Dantes. Edmond had his whole life together. He was about to marry the love of his life, a character named Mercedes, and he was about to become captain of a ship, the Pharaon. Unfortunately, all of this was taken away from him when he was thrown in jail and forced to stay there for 14 years until he escaped. He vowed to get revenge on those who wronged him and he did just that by disguising himself as the Count of Monte Cristo and going after his enemies. Cruelty, specifically in The Count of Monte Cristo, helps develop the characters and the theme of the book.

From then on, he became the perpetrator of cruelty. After he was a victim, his outlook on life changed and he began to bestow cruelty on all of the people that wronged him. When the Count became the perpetrator, he became ruthless. He did whatever he needed to do to make his enemies suffer just like he did. He hurt many innocent people on his road to revenge. His revenge even caused the death of a young boy who was the son of one of his enemies. He made sure his enemies suffered just as much as he did. For example, as part of his revenge, he put one of his enemies, Dangler, in a jail cell and made him pay one hundred thousand francs for whatever he ate. He did this to make Dangler suffer just like he did while in jail. While the Count was the perpetrator, the theme was developed even more. The Count used the mindset of an eye for an eye a tooth for a tooth as the basis for all of his revenge. He made sure that every one of them suffered just as much as he did when they were the perpetrators and he was the victim. Facing cruelty made it very easy for him to give out the same amount of cruelty that he
