I've had one roller coaster of a ride with country music. For about two years in middle school, I would constantly tune into my local country music radio station, 98.7 WMZQ, to listen to the new hits. I began to fall in love with country music, as I even sang Garth Brooks’s, “The River” at my eighth-grade talent show. I was obsessed with the fun beats and funky lyrics about trucks and tractors. Then country music and I broke up, and I hated it. When people asked what kind of music I liked, I would say, “I like everything, except country music.” For over half of my time in high school, I refused to even listen to one note of a country song. About 60.8 million people in the United live in areas considered to be rural (Defining Rural). Considering that the US population is over 330 million people that is a relatively small percentage. This means the voices of the people who live in rural areas are often ignored and forgotten. Country music brings the experiences of rural living to light, speaking for the 60.8 million people who otherwise wouldn’t have their voices heard.
