Country Women’s Association of Western Australia The values of the Anzac spirit are courage, ingenuity, endurance, equality, and mateship. The Country Women's Association of Western Australia (CWA of WA) is a community group that embodies the values and actions of the ANZAC spirit, such as equality, ingenuity, and mateship, in many ways. The ANZAC soldiers demonstrated equality in a number of ways. The fact that they were one of the first military forces to permit women to participate in non-combat roles is among the most notable examples. Women were able to participate meaningfully in the war effort by working as nurses, clerks, and other support personnel. They were able to adjust to unpredictable circumstances as well as discover innovative solutions to issues on the battlefield. The ANZACs were able to create their own equipment and develop new tactics and strategies, which allowed some protection from enemy fire while also preventing troops from advancing rapidly and prolonging the fight. One such tactic was the creeping barrage, which involved a curtain of artillery fire moving ahead of the advancing troops, to provide them with cover and support. Other strategies include moving under the cover of darkness, communicating with secret codes, and planting decoys, ranging from courageous individual acts to the creation of fake equipment. Many ANZAC soldiers were the inventors of new warfare. Lance Corporal William Beech, one of the Australian Imperial force, invented the periscope rifle in May of 1915. This rifle allowed soldiers standing in trenches to aim and fire without being exposed to enemies. In 1916, British General William Birdwood had said, ‘Our complete moral superiority over the Turk is partly due to a very clear invention of a man named Beech…”. Moreover, to overcome a shortage of bombs, ANZAC troops recycled old food tins into weapons. They are renowned for their resourcefulness and ability to come up with creative responses to issues. For example, they have created a variety of innovative fundraising plans, like cookbook sales and craft fairs. These fundraisers have contributed largely to funding things like food, clothing, hospitals, schools, bush nurses, etc. The CWA of WA have also come up with many advocacies to issues a number of Australians have faced. According to the CWA of WA’s news articles, they have urged a parliament debate to introduce and international day of rural women, introduced campaigns for rail crossing safety, and pushed harder restrictions to prevent viruses such as foot and mouth disease.
