Australia had many reasons to join the war and with the use of propaganda and rallies in Australia, there were high numbers for war enlistment in 1914. Australians had lots of reasons to go to war. Their alliance with Britain made it difficult for Australia to have any identity of their own and made lots of Australians go to war as they were defending their “mother country”. Other reasons why Australians had enlisted to go to war included: thought it was a chance to travel and see the world, thought it would be short, men wanted to get chicks as they liked the uniform and some people enlisted to get away from work, school and even their families. Soldiers were being recognised for their braveness and how much courage they had for being able to go to another country for war. It was important that back at home people were being told positive things that the soldiers were doing as it would make them feel proud that those are their sons, brothers, fathers, husbands and boyfriends out their fighting for their country. It was also good as hearing positive news over bad news would make them feel less worry. These good reports of the soldiers lead to the Anzacs being known as kind and brave soldiers and also led to Australia being a loved country as our soldiers had provided us with a good name as a good country. Newspapers had reported that “There has been no finer feat in this war than this sudden landing in the dark and storming the heights, above all holding on whilst the reinforcements were landing.” (The Argus, 8 May 1915) Things on the home front were changing for better and there were lots of changes in the workplaces. The changes in economy included that lots of farmers and wool makers profited a lot of money as they supplied daily needs. Today we still continue to celebrate the sacrifices that the soldiers had made for us and how they fought in war. The Anzac Legend was the heroic soldier that all Australian soldiers were seen as. The Anzac soldiers were brave, had great mateship and made good achievements in war. These were seen as representing Australia and giving our country a national identity as these qualities were not uniquely Australian, but the Anzacs had been renowned for it. Anzacs were recognised for their resourcefulness, spirit of independence, sense of humour and their willingness to endure hardship. They were also celebrated for their reluctance to accept authority without questions and their level headedness. These characteristics formed the Anzac Legend and made Australia learn these characteristics. Today Australia still continues to celebrate the Anzac legend and the sacrifices they made for us. We celebrate Anzac Day on the 25th of March which shows we will always remember the Anzac legend as long as the celebration keeps going o every year. Children are taught about it at school, which means everybody will learn about the great scarifies they had made for them to be alive today.
