Hi, I’m Ruby Honrado, I have successfully completed my Bachelors degree in Occupational Therapy. ACU has taught me many skills and prepared me for my chosen career path. As an Occupational Therapist I will be working with a range of people, from those in community groups, schools, hospitals, NDIS and rural areas to name a few. The specific community group that I will be spending the majority of my time with is those faced with injury, disability, or illness. As an Occupational Therapist (OT) I will provide an assessment of those that are recovering from an injury, living with a disability or illness, assisting them in achieving any goals they have as they recover and return to daily living. Our relentless consumerism is a major factor in driving extreme weather patterns and an increase in natural disasters. These extremes have profound implications for everyone's physical and mental wellbeing. Children are vulnerable as they develop, potentially hindering their access to healthcare, education, and overall wellbeing (McGill et al., 2023). Organisations such as The Royal Far West Bushfire Recovery Program have stepped in to assist in the recovery of children exposed to the 2019-2020 Australian Black Summer fires. This program focuses on teaching children “coping strategies” (McGill et al., 2023) to help them express their emotions in the aftermath of the fires. A team of Allied health workers collaborated on this project, aiming to reduce the impact of this traumatic event on children. Importantly, this service is made available to all affected individuals, including the most vulnerable members of society. This demonstrates the significant impact of environmental crises on communities, highlighting the crucial role of promoting the common good and upholding human dignity within local community groups.
