Cowboys lived a rough, tough, and fashionable life while riding with cattle up to Chicago. However, when railroads struck Texas, it hurt their business. While riding cowboys usually liked to wear a ”ten-gallon” hat. Cowboys jobs were usually to ride animals to the North. In the early 1870’s tragedy struck for cowboys when railroads came to Texas. Joseph Glidden invented barbed wire and marked out ranches. Cowboys often wore a ”ten-gallon” hat., chaps, and a bandana. They wore the “ten-gallon” hat to protect them from the blinding sun. The chaps or leggings were to protect them from thorns and cacti. Bandanas were worn because while galloping the cattle would kick up dust clouds. Cowboys would often ride cattle to Chicago.
