Do you think it is a waste to get a degree then not even use it in your job? I don’t think it’s a waste because Miss Gloria is doing something she loves. Louis Porter writes “They were so polite and respectful to her that Michael was wondering how a simple cook could gain so much respect” (Pg. 256). This show s miss Gloria likes her job due to her coworkers respecting her. Anyone would love their job if their coworkers treated them with such high respect. Gloria also loves her job so much she has stayed there for 25 years, and she didn’t go back to teaching. Another reason Gloria couldn’t use here degree was because there was too many teachers in Minnesota and not enough jobs. Porter writes “but I never could get on in the school system up here. I have heard teachers talk about how hard it was to get into the school system. I could see that happening in Minnesota due to our good school systems. Gloria also love her job because she’s a role model to her coworkers. Porter writes “people around here respect me and I respect them, the rules especially apply to me” (Pg. 257). This shows us that Gloria loves her job because of her role model role to her coworkers. She says this because she usually won’t break to rules and take the guest elevator. Gloria also says she has used her education to help benefit the kitchen. Porter show this on page 258 by writing “but just my education to help turn that kitchen into a well-run operation”. Gloria education helped here even though she isn’t teaching. Gloria is still teaching still in the kitchen by training people into jobs.
