The book Canyons by Gary Paulsen is about the strange connection between Brennan, a present-time 14-year-old boy, and Coyote Runs, a 14-year-old Apache boy. He is very excited to go on his first raid and become a man. The story takes place in El Paso, Texas, which has a very hot climate and is nestled by many mountains, cliffs, and canyons. Brennan loves to run, but he says that he does it for himself. The track coach urges him to play but he won’t.
Soon Coyote will be leading his first ever raid, which is a test to see if he is ready to become the man he really believe to be. The other main character is Brennan Cole, he is 14 years old boy who is struggling in school. His mother rarely helps him and he buys his clothes and earns his own money. In “Canyons” the young boy coyote runs is moving him

Should Sports Teams Stop Using Native Americans as a Mascot? For decades, sports teams have used Native Americans as mascots. Professional sports teams like the Chicago Blackhawks and Washington Redskins seem to be the most controversial when it comes to this topic. However, many Native Americans, myself included, find the use of our people as mascots offensive.
I will also give some quick facts Sitting Bull the Indian. Sitting Bull was a great chief, leader, warrior, and person in general. He was know as a great warrior from a very young age. He experienced battle at a very young age, he was only fourteen when he first went to battle.
Tȟatȟáŋka Íyotake, or Sitting Bull, the notable Hunkpapa Lakota Sioux holy man with audacity, was a Native American who endured the years of resistance to United States government policies. The result of this phenomenon was the overpowering conquer of United States army officer George A. Custer. This also included his 7th Calvary at Little Big Horn. During his strife for survival on the North American Great Plains, Sitting Bull was known to amalgamate with other tribes, such as the Sioux. From all of his indispensable moments and redundant contributions, Sitting Bull will emphatically be remembered today.
Native American Mascot Controversy In a recent study conducted by the sociology professor at California State University, James Fenelon, it was found that out of 786 Native Americans 67% agreed that the term ‘Redskins’, used in sports team’s names, is offensive. Redskin’s and any other Native American term, slang or imagery is offensive and should not be used because these things are sacred to Native American culture, and most of the mascots and the terms used are stereotypical, degrading, and dehumanizing. Many of the mascots used today and in the past related to Native American culture, and though the name may not be meant for the intent to harm or disrespect, they still do cause this.
Anthropomorphism is also a key element in “Coyote Steals Fire” the same way it is in “How Stories Came to Earth. One way the story demonstrates anthropomorphism is Coyote’s ability to talk. Coyote uses his ability to talk to talk to one character in the story, Thunder. Coyote’s ability to talk is an ability regular coyotes do not have. Coyote talks to Thunder and says to him, “Let us play a game of dice” (Erdoes and Ortiz 45).
Nature is a tempting escape from reality, but presents obstacles even for the best-equipped adventurers, like Robyn Davidson. It also challenges a pretentious individual, Chris McCandless (also known as Alexander Supertramp), who has a complete disregard for nature and its true power. The story Tracks tells the journey of Robyn Davidson, who partook in a nine-month journey across the deserts of Western Australia to the Indian Ocean. Unlike Chris McCandless who traveled solo, she was accompanied by her dog Diggity and four camels that she tamed herself to help carry the heavy supplies to aid her expedition. The vast isolation of the desert is exactly what attracted Davidson to it, just like the Alaskan Wilderness called to McCandless.
Bloody, gruesome, action packed, and romantic are all acceptable terms to describe “Apocalypto.” This film took place in a Mesoamerican tribe right before Christopher Columbus landed in the Americas. At the beginning, the film depicts the average everyday struggles of a Native American tribe which included hunting for food, trading, rituals, and taking care of their loved ones this allowed the viewer to perceive this indigenous tribe to being an “ecological indian” tribe. I liked how Mel Gibson made jaguar paw (the main character) seem like he knew every single part of his village in order to use his environment to his advantage against Zero Wolf’s (antagonist) group. Jaguar Paw’s tribe was raided and destroyed in order to recruit slaves and
The Coyote, (Canis Latrans) is indigenous to the North American Continent. It is a tertiary consumer on the trophic scale, which means it is on the top of the food chain. The average lifespan of a Coyote is around 11-13 years. What a Coyote can eat is a large span of things. Small animals, like rabbits and squirrels, and large animals such as deer, cows, and sheep.
The narrator also indicates that he is alone in the desert. Until encountering the snake, the narrator believes that he is the “only thing abroad”. The narrator is completely away from society with no other humans nearby. The man is strolling through the desert, which is the snake’s habitat. The snake can normally roam freely throughout his environment.
There are stories that can turn out to be another convention set up or else more honest casualties will kick the
Sitting Bull was considered a great leader and helped shape the way we treat Indians today. Throughout the 1800s the U.S. Government fought against many Indian tribes because of the rich land that promised gold. Sitting Bull and many others “set aside their differences in the face of intolerable abuse by the U.S. Government” (www.californiaindianeducation.org). Sitting Bull fought in wars and united with other tribes to protect his land.
The Trickster hero serves as a subject onto which are projected the fears, failures, and unattained ideals of the source culture; that creates order out of chaos and teaches humans the skills of survival through negative examples that usually end with a complete failure, so these stories generally combine lessons with humor. Now, I would like to focus on the trickster Coyote, whose myths were told by the tribes of California, Plateau and Southwest areas. I have found a lot of interesting myths that related to Coyote that I would like to comment, but I will concentrate in the story I liked the
