Kaleb Karikari Ms. Allen ENL 1W1.80 15 May 2024. The journey of the forest Crabbe A person's journey in life is unique, it can help them change, as a whole. The book “Crabbe” by William Bell introduces Franklin Crabbe as an 18 year old who runs away from home. At the beginning of the book, he is in a mental hospital. Later on, he runs away, facing some challenges before he falls over a waterfall and meets Mary. She is a “beautiful woman” who is very physically and mentally strong, who leaves home after she kills her husband. Crabbe quickly catches on after going home from being in the forest for a while. Crabbe is physically weak at the start of his adventure. In the beginning, Crabbe was weak. Crabbe does not do anything physical or anything that causes him to work/sweat. This makes him have creaky limbs ‘“stretching my creaky limbs”’ (Bell Journal 6). He refers to his limbs being creaky and “skinny”. Crabbe has to drag the canoe he uses to take it out of the garage “Getting the canoe was a strain” (37) later on Crabbe is now able to lift the canoe he's chopping and carrying wood, and even goes hunting with Mary, Crabbe show’s development as he lives primitively and develops a physique “I was in good shape for the first time” (95). He also has an addiction “im almost an alcoholic”(81) he drinks a strong liquor named “silent sam” and calls it his “pal” without it he says he feels “b*tchy and full or anxious” he goes on to show that this not only has a physical stronghold on him but also mentally. Crabbe struggled and Mary realized that so she finds a solution to take his mind off of things. “‘Maybe when you really want a drink, you can light that pipe up’”. Crabbe’s addiction started to go away as he does not feel for it any more, that's when he starts being able to focus. He is eating better things and more plants, since he is in a forest and it forces him to look for food and eat properly. He eats protein, berries, herbs and vegetables. Crabbe is having trouble making friends and speaking to people. He feels like he never fits in when it comes to the people at school and around him “ where were all alone in the spite of illusion of comfort from other people” (88) and he even feels uncomfortable in his parents presence “ my parents were the opposite always trying to make me dependant so they could control me” (138). Crabbe feels like his parents are the reason why he leaves. Crabbe feels alone, but then Mary comes along, and as soon as he meets Mary he develops a bond which he has never done before. Crabbe’s time with her makes him develop socially. His bond with Mary helps him express his feelings. Crabbe never felt like he could speak to his parents about anything, but now that he knows how a bond works, he can express his feelings to his parents and others around him. His relationship/bond with Mary gets stronger and at a point in time he falls in love with her “I loved her” him finding love is good but he also shows that through his emotional bond with Mary helps him develop social skills. Crabbe knew people, but had trouble talking to them. The only reason that was is because they would shut themselves out, which shows Crabbe to not even try and converse so he thought that he should not try “I knew lots of kids during my four years of high school who were independent” (154).
