What has been challenging so far?
In my eyes, the most challenging part was understanding the difference between Craig, the main character’s, life then to his life currently. He talks in the beginning about how he is depressed and he quickly changes the time period to when he wasn’t “bad”. It gets confusing when the time frame changes so frequently. For example: In chapter thirteen, he talks about first taking Zoloft and how he felt much happier. Then, the tables are quickly turned and he is back to the current point of his life where he is depressed. I ask myself: “What would I do in Craig’s situation?’. As I do this, I often get a better understanding of where Craig is coming from. I would definitely be stressed if I had tons of homework, being pressured by friends, and often not feeling like you have someone to talk to. I understand that Craig feels lost as he doesn’t find a reason to be as depressed as he is. He isn’t getting bullied, he doesn’t have family issues, etc. I sometimes go back in the book and reread sections that I don’t understand. Further, Craig uses a lot of metaphors which gets confusing. For example, he relates his life to “tentacles” which is basically an ongoing cycle of “what ifs”. I need to reread these sections to understand more of Craig’s opinions. As someone who was raised by a Western mother it has been compelling learning what a mother from a completely different standpoint thinks about one. Amy, the Chinese mother, thinks that Western mothers are way too relaxed and forgiving when it comes to their children’s education and their future. For Example: if a child of a Western mother came home with an A-, their parents would congratulate them while a Chinese mother would be shocked and disappointed.
