In the article, “Created Equal” by Milton and Rose Friedman, the authors argue that equality of outcome puts the people’s liberty in jeopardy. In this article the Friedmans discuss equality of outcome and how it forces people who have certain benefits in their society but are forced to end up in the same place as everyone else, regardless of hard work or ability. To the Friedmans this is a clear contradiction of liberty and should not be allowed to become a reality. The Friedmans believe that equality and liberty are the two concepts that every individual should try to achieve in a society. Equality to the Friedmans means the chance to pursue one's goals according to his own abilities. While liberty means the opportunity to decide one's future. Equality of opportunity is based upon the people’s rights and opportunity achieve a better life. This kind of equality does not conflict with freedom, but rather it is a part of freedom. The Friedmans note that on the off chance that somebody is denied work they are fit for because of their background, color or religion, then they are being denied their opportunity to achieve a better life. It is false advertisement that capitalism is a system of the rich taking advantage of the poor is not true. The Friedmans believe that the free market has allowed the common man to achieve marvelous levels of prosperity. Whereas, when the market is controlled, the gap between the rich and poor becomes more extensive, like in Communist Russia or China. The achievements of capitalism have greatly benefited the common man. The Friedmans end their article by expressing that the society that puts equality before liberty will end up without one or the other, the society that puts liberty before equality will end up with both. Individuals are allowed to reach the top, but need to fight to stay
