Liberty As A Role Model In Ayn Rand's Anthem

As hateful as the world is, humans tend to admire one another. Whether it is because of beauty or positive character traits, most people have role models. An excellent example of a role model is Liberty 5-3000, a primary character in Ayn Rand’s novel Anthem. She is pursued by the main character, Equality 7-2521, and they share a forsaken bond in spite of their society’s laws. While Liberty is a criminal in her society, she is a beautiful, resilient hero in modern society. Liberty is altruistic in nature, and her deep level of care for Equality sets an example of a healthy relationship dynamic. Most humans are born with an instinctive mindset to prioritize themselves. Liberty puts this attribute on display many times; most notably when she treks through a forbidden plot of land called the Uncharted Forest. She escapes her home and follows broken branches in the Uncharted Forest to find Equality and reunite with him (Rand 82). Liberty’s attempt to support Equality amidst the danger surrounding her lawlessness shows how much she cares about him and exemplifies a healthy relationship. Showing support is an affirming practice that should be applied to all relationships, whether romantic or platonic. Once again, Liberty shows her consideration and relationship skills by supporting Equality in his new stage of life. Equality was living in solitude and fending for himself when Liberty came alongside him and promised to follow Equality and “share [his] damnation” (Rand 82). Frankly, Liberty’s devotion to Equality is slightly controversial. Physical beauty is desired by most; many people wear makeup, lift weights, or undergo surgery to change their appearance. These people attempt to cover up imperfections and insecurities by altering their appearance to one that is more aesthetically pleasing and acceptable to society. Therefore, beautiful people are admired by most. Liberty fits the description of a beautiful woman solely by her external appearance. She is so captivating that Equality breaks one of his society’s rules and thinks of her above others. Upon first glance, he notes her physical characteristics - a thin frame, dark and fearless eyes, and glowing hair - and that “the earth was as a beggar under [her] feet” (Rand 39). As beautiful as she is, however, much of what makes her beautiful is her boldness in the face of uncertainty. Defying the oppressive rules set in place by corrupt leaders requires an incredible amount of courage. In a society like Liberty’s, the governing group punishes criminals harshly and relentlessly; this amplifies her boldness. The confident preservation of her beliefs amidst the adversity she faces makes her a role model to anybody feeling powerless or oppressed. She perfectly balances standing up for herself and causing minimal conflict with others while rebelling.
