The tension grew as Ashleigh looked into the tea-pot with money. Her parents were divorced and always fought. Her mom was a strict, level-headed and somewhat loving, her dad was a dreamer, easy going and caring of Ashleigh. Her dad gave Ashleigh a nickname “Ashes”, Ashleigh liked it but her mom hated it. Ashleigh took the money from her mom because her dad made her feel worthy, she liked her dad more than her mom and she didn't want to disappoint her dad and believed in him. Ashleigh took her mom's money because her dad made her feel worthy. He always complimented her every time he saw her, he would say something nice and caring. For example, “you get more and more beautiful...You have flair, Ashes. You’re sure to make a mark”(Pfeffer 2). Complements from her dad felt nice to Ashleigh and made her feel good inside and outside and that gave her self-confidence. Her dad gave her a nickname and gifts when he saw her, even tho Ashleigh saw her dad a couple days of the week he still liked to give her a little gift. He sometimes gave her flowers that smelt beautiful or he would write a song. The author states “...imagining what I could do with two hundred dollars. I looked at dad and realized he’d had those same fantasies. Well, why not. I was his daughter after all”(Pfeffer 3). It would be fine because they both thought about it and her dad needed it to help pay back a deal. He says he didn’t deserve Ashleigh as a daughter, she wants to prove to him that he is a good father. Also, she wants him to believe in her like she believes in him. She is worried about her father getting in trouble, she doesn’t want him to get in trouble because he owns $200 and she really wants to help him out. The only way to help is to take the $200 from her
