Greetings ladies and gentlemen, today I have for you a presentation pertaining to a detrimental issue that is affecting our society Picture this, you are poor; not even able to pay for this week’s groceries. You hate this lifestyle, but there is one way you can get that money you need. Take it. It’s a simple decision that can alter a person’s morals and ideals completely and for a lifetime. Society is plagued with the blight of crime, and the percentage of the population that is favouring the idea of breaking the law is growing. You may be under the impression that you’d never stoop to something such as crime, and that it has no effect on our daily life; You are wrong. In Australia from 2014 to 2015, the number of record criminal offenders was an outstanding 411,686. Within this, the number of offences committed by youth, or 10 to 19 year olds, was 85,442. These figures are staggering, and the fact that most of those numbers were forced into the list by the unfortunate circumstances of their lives. How would you feel if you were reduced to a number on an offenders list? And wasn’t your own fault. It can be noted, that the rate at which crimes such as theft or assault, are committed in society, pales in comparison to different form of illegal activity; the dealing of drugs. It is subtly presented to us in the film freedom writers. In a particular scene of the movie, Andre I asked to do a ‘job’ for one of his fellow brothers. Though not explicitly stated, the passing of an unknown package entails some sort of transportation or dealing of illegal drugs. It shows us a very confronting side of society, one of which we tend to try to ignore. A shocking percentage of the population is forced to turn to criminal activity, and not by their own choice. Circumstances force the decision on them, and what follows this decision ruins lives. Whether it’s the punishment of a prison sentence, injury, addiction, or even the loss of life. Crime is the roots of the tree that these horrible results stem
