The Criminal Justice System Today

The modern Criminal Justice System can sometimes make unfair rulings against citizens. The system often treats people of color and the underprivileged unethically. They frequently are wrongfully accused, also they serve longer sentences in prison. Though the United States has improved greatly in the past century on how we view race, there still is a massive issue with how the Criminal Justice System treats them. In Bryan Stevenson’s TED Talk , “Let's Talk About Injustice,” he talks about how the United State’s Criminal Justice System is different than justice systems in other parts of the world; the United States has one of the highest incarceration rates. Stevenson states that one out of nine people who face the death penalty are later proven innocent. This is a shockingly high rate of innocent people being killed for no reason. There is obviously a problem when a drug dealer has the same sentencing as a murderer. A murderer has done an unforgivable thing and they deserve a life sentence; While a drug dealer has definitely made a mistake, but they deserve another opportunity to become a better person, and often they don’t get that chance. Former drug dealers do not usually have a chance at getting a job after being imprisoned and they need money because of all the fines they have to pay for committing the crime in the first place. Then they just go back to dealing drugs for money and then they go back to jail again, it is just one big cycle. Also, someone in the video mentions while one in twenty-seven white people end up prison at least once in their lives, one and three back people end up in prison at least
