Careers in criminology require not only how to communicate effectively, but the most important is the written language. There are many types of writing in this field for example, police officer writes reports and forensic technicians write records of their findings. While in college studying to major in criminology or criminal justice, students are required to do extensive research for their papers.
For the students in the criminal justice studies, there are types of writing and expectations. Some of the professors do not ask for assignments, but there are some professors who require their students to produce research papers, essay exams, and notes that have been taken during class. The students are expected to take notes and do the required reading also on their own. Note taking and reading are the crucial aspects of the class. The most important part is the research paper, which is the only major writing assignment the students will have. My professor, who has a PhD in both criminology and criminal justice, each course he took required any extensive research paper following the format of top tiered journal in their discipline, so introduction, lit reviews, methods, analysis, findings, conclusions, and more. In courses like stats were oriented toward focusing on methods and analysis where as in a state crime course my professor had to do a case study. The citation that is required to use is ASA (American Sociological Association).
