Critical approach: Gender Criticism In everyday talk, the concept of literature criticism is simply referring to the way of understanding and analyzing literary texts. It involves revealing the different interpretations and comprehensive orientations of different readers or critics among different literary work. Critics always try to examine literary texts of different authors in different eras pointing out relations between works considering several aspects including cultural perspectives. In addition, the way critics look at any work mostly depends on their background and feelings, and reaching a complete understanding of the work will led to their appreciating literary texts as well as improving their thinking and reasoning skills. In other words, women are not considered as a primer element in communities and somehow, they can be neglected. For example, from the very beginning of “The Lottery”, when describing the arrival to the lottery place, there is a specific order of the arrival of the characters according to which the writer is trying to show that women always come at the end and the family holders , superior men, come first; in fact, this stereotype image that the writer is drawing is not limited to a specific age, it also occurs among children when the writer describes that first -among kids- comes the boys, then girls and with adults, men comes before women. In relation to this image, we can find this clearly reflected in some societies where men walk in the front and women follow them in three of four steps behind; this image is noticed in some Arab malls. Additionally, it is notable that among the two sexes, men are more authorized in their societies in general and families in particular; to illustrate, we can find this clearly reflected in “The Lottery” where mothers ask or call their own children several times seeking their respond, whereas in father’s case, it just needs one sharp call to obey immediately. Equally important, women are represented in “Everyday Use” to be materialistic and attracted by appearance like Dee, when she finally returns home to visit her family, she gets out of a fancy car, wearing a glamorous outfit including her yellow dress, gold earrings, noise making bracelets, white heels along with her possessing a polaroid, which can’t be possessed by anyone unless he is rich, reflecting the women’s desire in pursuing wealth and neat
