Vidya Jagadeesh Mrs. wald/Mrs. Ruggiero Language Arts- period 7 28 february 2023 Things are not always what they seem in our daily lives when we grow up in them. In the short story book ”The Lottery", Shirly Jackson wrote that a town has a lottery that turns out to be very dark. In the dystopian fiction book the giver, Lois Lowry wrote in the book a town people believe to be a nice friendly town is actually not. In both stories, people's behaviors reveal that things are not always what they seem. In this quote “ He killed it! my father killed it!” (Lowery p150 ch19). Jonas just found out what release actually was and his father was one of those who killed them. Jonas did not think his town killed people who wanted release or was not good there. Now Jonas is mad at his father and dous not want to go home but let's get into the next quote. In this quote “It's just the pills. You're ready for the pills, that's all. Thats the treatment for stirrings” (Lowey P38 ch5). Jonas had just had his first crush in his dream called stirrings. In this quote “Although the villagers had forgotten the ritual and lost the original black box, they still remembered to use stones” (Shirly 7). The town is preparing to kill Mrs. Hutchinson because she won the lottery. It states in the book that the lottery had been going on for a while. Which means they must have done the ritual for every time they did it. Mrs. Hutchinson said, “It isn't fair, it isn't right” (Shirly 7). Mrs.Hutchinson was saying it through the whole lottery which means just like Jonas she tried to stop the lottery but couldn't. If they would have listened maybe the lottery would have ended
