The world is a cruel place. People who are sheltered and have lots of innocence and lack of experience will not be prepared for its cruelty. With the more experience people encounter, the less innocent they become. Innocence can protect society from knowing horrible things, but the more innocent people are, the less they will be ready for the real world and its challenges. In the book The Giver, the overall statement is the less innocence one has, the harder life will be.
The more experience someone has, the greater chance they will want to try something new. In the book The Giver, Jonas learns about feelings, family, and love. He wanted everyone to be able to enjoy these things. As a result, Jonas stopped taking the pill that prevents him from having feelings. He soon knew that having feelings can be good but, it also can hurt him and affect his decisions. This is shown in the following quote, “But now Jonas had experienced real sadness. He felt grief. He knew there was no quick comfort for emotions like these.” (Lowry, 166) In the world today, people can experience all types of

Jonas also found out what it means to starve. This was very hard for him, he now realized that all places are not like his community where everyone is all the same and had everything provided for them. If Jonas had had lots of innocence, he would not have been starving, he would of stayed in his community. This is shown in the following quote, “Jonas remembered, suddenly and grimly , the time in his childhood when he had been chastised for a misusing a word. The word had been “starving.” You have never been starving, he had been told. You will never be starving. Now he was.” (Lowry, 217 ) In our world, there are people that are starving everyday. Some people need help with getting food like Jonas. This shows the theme, the less innocence one has the harder life will
