Crohns disease is believed to have some genetic tendency, as well as long-term inflammation of the gut (Risk Factors, n.d). However, S was unsure about any GI history in his family. He did say that his mother had many of the symptoms that he was experiencing. He describe his mother as very private and so nothing of her illness was ever shared or discussed in his family. What he does know is that his mother did have to get a couple of blood transfusion, which if she did have Crohns, she could have needed a blood transfusion for severe anemia, a common side effect of crohns (Schmelzer, & F.
