Everyone has a time in life feeling disconnected from their culture. Whether it is from the lack of mentors or from forgetting history, can one overcome this? Can one reconnect with history and culture? In Crow Winter by Karen McBride, the protagonist, Hazel Ellis, rediscovers her Indigenous culture and connection to the land through her mentors and Indigenous history. Fortunately, Nanabush reminds her of the teachings. Nanabush is like a god figure telling her how she should see things and pursue them. Therefore, Nanabush helps Hazel gain more knowledge about her ancestors and land. Finally, Hazel’s mentor, Joni, helps her understand more about herself. Joni and Hazel have a long relationship. When Hazel states that Joni was “the woman who used to babysit [her] and Gus when [they] were little.” she implies that she is comfortable around her (90). This makes it easier for her to rediscover herself, knowing she has someone she can trust. Plus, Joni has Hazel’s best interests at heart. Joni helps Hazel heal from her grief and find a place in the world. When Hazel’s mom was talking about Joni and “That she might have a job for [her]” (83). The job Joni offers Hazel helps her to confront her problems. This job aids Hazel in finding the answers she’s been looking for about her father and trying to deal with the grief she’s been pushing away.
