CSI Miami also follows a procedural plotline with a crime at the beginning, slowly revealing clues so the story can be solved. Nonetheless, a "new narrative mode,” as discussed by Jeffery Sconce, which incorporates both “episodic treatments of a program's story world [… and] larger arcs of long-term narrative progression” is also present. The medical examiner, Alexx Woods, develops as a character over the six seasons she appears on the show. We learn about Alexx’s life including her family and some of her friends. She often mentions her kids and has a personal connection to some of the victims in seasons three and four. Calleigh Duquesne also has these “larger arcs” with strained, multi-season relationships. This alternate structure can be seen sprinkled in throughout the rest of the show’s 232 episodes. The CSI: Miami cast has also done crossover shows with CBS’s original Crime Scene Investigation and CSI: NY. These deviances from a strictly procedural plotline, allows today’s viewers to get caught up in the show while they can binge for hours on end.
Another deviation from the old-fashioned crime investigation, is the introduction of characters from different socioeconomic backgrounds for the investigators, perpetrators, and victims. Although crime is still the focus of the show, CSI: Miami has a diverse presence of both victims and perpetrators. In specific, the Latinx population is represented and allows CSI: Miami to attract a Latinx audience. In season two, episode four, “Death Grip,” CSI Miami even points out discrimination as they help a Latino family prosecute the unfortunate murder of their child, showing the disparity to the manpower devoted to finding a white, blonde girl in a similar situation.
