The Ancient Greeks laid foundations for the Western civilizations in the fields of math and science. Euclid, a Greek mathematician known as the “Father of Geometry,” is arguably the most prominent mind of the Greco-Roman time, best known for his composition in the area of geometry, the Elements. (Document 5) To this day, Euclid’s work is still taught in schools worldwide.
The Vision in Joe Turner’s Come and Gone In August Wilson’s play Joe Turner ’s Come and Gone there was a character named Herald Loomis. At the end of Act 1 that character had a vision. My interpretation of the vision is that it was a depiction of the freeing of slaves and their fight for normal lives.
The Ancient Greeks were affected in many ways by the things around and in the country called Greece. The geography of the land has had a great influence on Greece and the inhabitants. Throughout the history of Greece, there came more effects to the people who lived there. Some of these effects on the Ancient Greek civilization were positive and some were negative. Most of these effects were beneficial to the Greeks.
Many of the ancient lands we learn about in school are situated in river valleys teeming with silt that’s just waiting for stuff to be grown in it. This doesn’t make things easy for them, exactly, but, at the very least, that part of their life is taken care of. They can get both water and food from these river valleys they call home, as well as wealth from trading their crops. This was the case for both Mesopotamia and Egypt. Ancient Greece, however, as stated in Document 1, did not have these advantages.
Greece is a land covered by mountains with nothing much else to it yet one of the greatest civilizations ever to exist on this planet. Greece is part of Europe but is made up of more than 6,000 islands as well as a peninsula. Ancient Greeks live over 2500 years ago and considering their geography it is remarkable that they got to the greatness that they did get to. But they could have been even greater if the geography Greece had cooperated with the ancient Greek cities and citizens in the areas of their economy, their social/cultural ways, and their political beliefs.
Persuasion from ethos establishes the speaker 's or writer 's good character. As you saw in the opening of Plato 's Phaedrus, the Greeks established a sense of ethos by a family 's reputation in the community. Our current culture in many ways denies us the use of family ethos as sons and daughters must move out of the community to find jobs or parents feel they must sell the family home to join a retirement community apart from the community of their lives ' works. The appeal from a person 's acknowledged life contributions within a community has moved from the stability of the family hearth to the mobility of the shiny car. Without the ethos of the good name and handshake, current forms of cultural ethos often fall to puffed-up resumes and other papers.
The period between 500 B.C.E to 338 B.C.E is referred to as “Classical Greece” due to the many achievements taken place, as well as the blossoming democracy in Athens, under the leadership of Pericles. One of the major confrontations during this period was between the Greek states and the Persian Empire. By the beginning of the 5th century BCE, Persia conquered Ionia, Thrace, and Macedonia while under the rule of Darius, and continued to expand his empire westward into mainland Europe.
The start of the period known as "Classical Greece" starts at around 800 B.C.E. and ends around 400 B.C.E. Classical Greece tells tales of Athens against Sparta, the Peloponnesian War. But that is only some of the events, as the achievements are a feat to behold. New branches of mathematics, such as geometry established new theorems, columns were prominently used in buildings of importance, and the first Olympics were first held to honor the gods and celebrate human achievement. The contributions of classical Greece are seen in Western civilization in the continuation of the Olympics, in the realistic depiction of subjects in various forms of art, in the development of medical ethics, in the architectural use of columns in the Western building
Athens and Sparta, located between the Aegean and the Ionian Sea, allied with each other in the Greco-Persian war. Due to the advanced and powerful navy of Athens incorporation with the well-built army of Sparta, they gained victory over the Persian Empire. After the victory, Athens gained wealth and dominance over the other Greek societies causing tensions between Sparta. They both share similarities towards their cultural background but had different views in creating an ideal society in addition to their state’s place in the world. Moreover, they differ from the concepts of a well trained or educated society and a well built military, but share similarities in their government format.
Since ancient times, the Aegean Sea has been a centerpiece for much rich cultural influence. This influence is seen in our architecture, exotic foods, old pottery, myths, and other things that have lasting effects on us. This fabulous place of mystery and wonder is what gives us most of our picture of Greece, Crete, and other surrounding islands: crystal clear, sparkling water around beautiful islands with lush green landscapes and ruins of old. In this project, I have delved into this and have come back with knowledge and connections of how Greece became the true birthplace of the West. Smaller islands, such as Santorini and Patmos, have been quiet in modern times but active in eras previous.
How did geography effect in Greek history? Or in other words what effects did geography have on Ancient Greece positive and negative? Well you could start by saying how the mountains served as natural barriers and divided ancient Greece. The mountains in Ancient Greece had a lot to do with some negative and also positive effects on Greece.
There are many greek influences on our culture today. However, these impacts are not very widely known in our modern society. The Greek culture affects our everyday way of life. They created democracy, the alphabet, libraries, the Olympics, math, science, architecture, and even lighthouses. Greecians created systems that would not be imagined in a person’s wildest dreams.
When looking back on ancient societies, arts and politics are often scrutinized by historians, used as key sources to illuminate how the population functioned, and in many cases, thrived. Ancient Greece was a society that thrived in unimaginable ways, with advances in architecture, entertainment, and politics that have influenced much of today 's societies around the world. While some may argue that politics and the arts, both developed separately in Ancient Greece, the arts actually impacted the development of politics and the society as a whole, and the influence of politics on the arts was likewise. Arts such as visual art, literature, music, and dance each were influenced by, and had their own influence on, the development of government and politics in Ancient Greece.
Early Greek mathematics leap was in 500-600 B.C. Pythagoras was a mathematician who spent time in Egypt learning Egyptians mathematics and he was credited for Pythagoras theorem which the Babylonians was aware of for 1000 years before him. And he created his own society group which includes men and women, and they discovered the incommensurability of the square root of the number 2. The Roman use letters instead of numbers, and a number consist of a specific sequence of Letters and the use some rules to make it understandable for them while doing
There are many different countries in our world and each of them has its own and unique culture. However, there is hardly a state in the world, which has as rich history as Greece has. The thing is, that Ancient Greece is known to be the place where modern European civilization with its values was born. Philosophers of this state created the majority of notions in this science while poets and playwrights of Ancient Greece managed to create the basis for classical literature. There is no use denying the fact that all these achievements became possible due to unite history of this very state.
