Culture is defined as the customary beliefs, social forms, and material traits of a racial, religious, or social group; also: the characteristic features of everyday existence (such as diversions or a way of life) shared by people in a place or time (Merriam
Webster). Culture makes people unique and without it, everyone would be blended together. Culture in my opinion is a great thing; however, with all great things come challenges. Learning more about other cultures would be a great way to overcome these challenges, and learning another language is a huge step in that direction. When you learn a language you also usually learn about the culture which is very important. You learn the practices of the culture and you learn what is important to that culture. Not caring about other cultures issues brings about more conflict and makes you look inconsiderate. A good example of this comes from the video America: Mosaic or Melting Pot? America is very unique because it is a country that has people from multiple cultures all living inside of it. I have heard all my life that America is the melting pot of the world, which makes sense to me. I see it as all cultures coming together and being one. But this video makes a very good point. We are a melting pot because we have a lot of different cultures, but we are trying to drive towards one mainstream culture and cover all of the outlying values, practices, and ideas. This is why they suggest that we should be a mosaic. A mosaic looks better and better the more differences you have within it. All of the differences come together to make a masterpiece. No one 100% aligns with mainstream culture. Everyone has differences and differences are what make people unique. They should be allowed to have those differences and people should be intrigued to learn about those differences.
