The article titled "Cultural Oppression and the High-Risk Status of African Americans" by Jerome Schiele was a fantastic article to read. Schiele was able to use a unique way of analyzing the situation of the oppression of Blacks. His article posed a non-biased standpoint since he pointed out faults of Eurocentric culture and behaviors of African Americans as explanations for this continued oppression. I thought the answers he stated for the oppression, such as the movement of Black churches to Suburban areas, was intelligent and well thought out. Schiele did not give vague reasonings. It is clear a lot of work went into the article. A lot of previous slaves probably did not know how to act in their communities. Furthermore, their reason for being more unfortunate than the Whites could merely be explained by fear. Because African Americans were exposed to the violent ways of control, such as whipping, by their slave masters, a lot of them probably feared getting jobs around a bunch of Whites. Also, it is possible they could have concerned about taking away the jobs from the Whites due to possible attempts of rebellion on African Americans. Regarding the 150 years after the end of slavery and the 50 years after the first modern Civil Rights Legislation, a lot of African Americans were still discriminated against and even to this day are not given equal opportunities. So, many African Americans are denied jobs and receive much lower wages than people of European descent, and it's most likely due to the roots of slavery and discrimination. A possible solution to reducing the great wealth gap that exists between whites and blacks in the United States is to eliminate the discrimination in the realm of housing
