Being isolated or not able to have something because of being different is tough. Imagine the people that are different races or they have a disability and they can not the same as others. Segregation lasted up until 1954, blacks in America were oppressed and given less because they did not have same pigment of skin. They were assumed to be less important so they were beat and forced to live in poor conditions. In Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck, many charters are limited to what they can do based of of barriers. Some characters like Crooks and Curley’s wife are isolated and blocked off and they both react differently. Some people are forced to have less due to being different. Because crooks was black he was isolated and not allowed to near the other men. Lennie asks, “ Why ain’t you wanted… Cause I’m black” (Steinbeck 68). Crooks at first did not want Lennie entering his room but realizes Lennie is different and is not racist. Usually Crooks would tell people that they have not right coming into his room. He uses his isolation as a way to hide from everyone and get privacy. On the other hand Curley’s wife is always desiring attention due to her isolation: “I get lonely… How’d you like not to talk to anybody”(Steinbeck 87). This is one of the many times Curley’s wife has tried to talk to someone. She has tried to have a conversation with Lennie before but George tells him not to talk to her. Lennie could not resist and talked to her. Her constant desire for attention ultimately leads to her death. People are made lonely from barriers like race and gender, and people must act in a different way. Some people are lead to depression due to having less physically and socially. Another thing is your happiness can be based off social class is a result of you characteristics. Today many people are still judged based off of appearances and in Of Mice and Men barriers force people to get discouraged, lonely and bad about themselves given less. We still read this story because many people are still affected by these things and until we stop blocking off people we will continue to have
