Stella and Will are both patients of Cystic Fibrosis, a disease that causes the lungs to fail. Will has B Cepacia, which also means he can not go close to somebody with cystic fibrosis (to avoid cross infection). Throughout the book “Five Feet Apart” both Will and Stella show growth in their characters. Both characters learn life skills from each other that help them become who they are by the end of the book. Stella shows character growth throughout the book. When Stella met Will, at first she was annoyed and distanced herself from him. As Will slowly approached her, the more Stella opened up. Will help Stella grow as a person and worry less about Cystic Fibrosis, to live life to the fullest because you never know what might happen the next day. As Stella and Will become closer, she grows more independently and relies on her own strength rather than the pressure from her childhood. After Poe (Stella’s best friend) died, Stella realized that one day she would die so she could live her life to the fullest just like Will does. As the book went on, Stella took more risks and did things outside of her comfort zone. Stella, since the beginning of the book, had no interest in love because of the fear of her dying on them. Will changed that perspective for her and allowed her to see a different side of love and how you can face obstacles together and not alone. Stella develops a love for Will throughout the book that makes her the brave girl that she becomes at the end of the book. Will show character growth throughout the book. He cares more about others than he cares about himself. Will took risks for Stella and did things outside of his comfort zone to be happy with her. Will shows a significant change in his emotional and physical health because of Stella. At the end of the book, Will makes his hardest decision of his life, leaving Stella. Once Stella got new lungs, Will knew it was too dangerous to cross infect her, so he had to say goodbye. Will making this responsible decision shows how much he cares for Stella and how much his character has grown from the beginning to the end of the book. Stella made the biggest impact on him, which helped him become more responsible, and he knew he had to use those skills for her. Throughout the book “Five Feet Apart” both Will and Stella show growth in their characters. Stella and Will have impacts on each other that helped them become who they were by the end of the book.
