Imagine being in a scenario where you could win money beyond your comprehension as long as you win a battle to the death against 23 other contestants. In The Hunger Games by Susan Collins, there is such a competition, an annual one at that. These competitions are called the “Hunger Games,” in which are a battle for riches at the risk of 24 contestants' lives, all contestants of varying ages and districts that they come from, there being 12 districts in total. There are two important characters from the same district, District 12; Katniss Everdeen, a girl that can hunt incredibly well, and whom also wields an absolutely burning hatred for the Capitol, and Peeta Mallark, a young baker’s boy who is naturally good willed and has nothing but kindness

In a dystopian world, Collins and Vonnegut demonstrate a suppressive government that uses propaganda which is manufactured to control and manipulate citizens, creating the illusion of a perfect utopian society. In the dystopian book The Hunger Games, Suzanne Collins shows how the government can gain control over its citizens with the help of propaganda. An example of this is when Katniss is explaining each school day in District 12, she mentions this: “Except for the weekly lecture on the history of Panem” (Collins 42). What Katniss is describing is the perfect form of propaganda in Panem, which is to start brainwashing kids at a young age so they start to believe what society tells them.

Taylor Prebula Mrs. Corrigan Trad Academic Contemporary Literature 29 January 2018 The Hunger Games: Dystopia Since the people in the society of Panem view the country as a locked down, restricted and a place full of inequality, Dystopia is one of the main themes of The Hunger Games. “Dystopia is an imagined place or state in which everything is unpleasant or bad, typically a totalitarian or environmentally degraded one” (Dystopia). The book is based on Katniss Everdeen’s point of view who is a part of district 12 which you will find out is not one of the best districts to reside in. The government is totalitarian and therefore views the whole situation as a part of a utopian society. The whole picture of the book could be described as a food chain, the weak on the bottom and the strong on the top.
