The Daphne plant is a shrub that is popular in North America. Daphne, also known as spruge laurel, lady laurel, paradise plant and dwarf bay. This small shrub is about 1-1.5 meters in height. The Daphne plant blooms in early spring before the leaves appear. Sweet-scented rose-purple flowers cluster on the stem. This plant is Extremely poisonous and fools people because of its sweet smell. A toxin called Mezerein in the bark and toxins called daphnin are in the shrub.
All parts of the Daphne plant are poisonous, especially in the bark, sap and berries. Mezerein in the bark is an acrid resin that can produce a sever skin irritation. Also, the Daphne has a bitter, poisonous glycoside. This plant is known to be co-carcinogenic[1] in the presence
