In order for an individual to understand the theory of memetics they must understand the concept of Universal Darwinism also know as Evolutionary Algorithm. Charles Darwin had a theory of evolution by natural selection that states that organisms evolve and adapt to their environment and it is not exclusive to biological systems such as genes, . Memes replicate and evolve through cultural transmission just as genes do through a genetic transmission. Dawkins blended the terms gene and mimeme, which is derived from the Greek term meaning “something imitated”. The term was then shortened to meme, which is something that is imitated or replicated with variation and selection. Memetics is the study of how memes spread in social systems and how they affect us as individuals. It is any non-generic element of culture that is transmitted by imitation. Memes are credited to a style, behavior, or idea that spreads from person to person within a certain culture. They are selfish replicators and an information pattern that are copied and succeed whether or not they are true or good. A common meme in today’s Internet is spread via social media, videos, emails, links, hashtags, and websites. A good example of an Internet meme is Grumpy Cat. Grumpy Cat is well known, shared, and transferred from different people. A meme can be a catchy song that is stuck in your head forcing you to sing it where it then is stuck in someone else’s head and continues to replicate. Internet memes are easily shared and created, which adds to their mass appeal. Memes make it fun for individuals to create interesting and thoughtful content, it can help catch attention of customers for certain companies and brands. In order to use a meme effectively one must consider their target audience, the audience’s interests, and what forms of media they use. The number of likes, views and shares it has can show a memes popularity online. It is growing in popularity and more and more memes just continue to evolve throughout time. Memes compete with other memes to see who is the best. A good meme is a meme that manages to reach the largest number of humans. They are not good because they do not contribute any type of benefit to individuals and are not useful.
