David Berkowitz’s Final Path David Berkowitz right before he was arrested was a postal worker. He was officially arrested on August 10, 1977, ending his over-a-year terror spree. When he got arrested he quickly admitted he was the killer. There were many events that had to take place before they found and caught David Berkowitz. On April 29th Berkowitz allegedly shot Sam Carr's Lab. Before he was suspected of shooting the dog he sent letters to Carr saying how dangerous the animal was. Berkowitz sent many letters to his neighbors and previous landlord talking crazy and making these individuals believe that Berkowitz was the “Son of Sam,” killer. They described him as neurotic, potentially suffering from paranoid schizophrenia, and he believed he was possessed by demons. On May 30, 1977, Jimmy Breslin, who is a journalist, received one of Berkowitz’s letters. The letter states “Blood and Family - Darkness and death - Absolute Depravity - .44(Crime).” This was written on the back while on the front it states past victims, insults the police, and asks what he was doing for July 29th. This is the first anniversary of the first shooting. This letter sent panic through many women and many changed their hair to not fit the description of many of his victims(crime). Usually but not always, Berkowitz gets away without a witness(BE 4). Police were able to get their first sketch of the killer at his last shooting(History). A witness came forward describing him as wearing a wig and driving a yellow car(Crime Museum). The witness also claimed that some police officers were giving out parking tickets that night, and by luck Berkowtiz’s yellow car was one of the cars that received a parking ticket that night(History). Then as they were investigating Berkowitz they found he received a parking ticket that night and the reports from his neighbors. This was enough evidence for police to believe he was their suspect. Police arrested Berkowitz, they searched his car, searched his apartment, searched his person(SC 4). They found a semi-automatic rifle when he was arrested, and also they found a .44-caliber revolver(History).
