David L. Brown ask the simple question, “What are words and why are they important?” Is this question as simple as it seems though? Yes, words are the sophisticated sounds that come out of our mouth and they help us communicate. The majority of the people I converse with speak english so, it’s very easy for me to understand what they are trying to say. But sometimes, we disagree and have a miscommunication because the person might think they are saying one thing while I am registering it as another. Personally, I get so mind-boggled that some people think that each word means the same thing to another person. This word’s definition, according to the Oxford Dictionary, is a sentimental longing or wistful affection for the past, typically for a period or place with happy personal associations. This word interest me for various reasons. One I would like to point out is the makeup of this word. The ‘nost’ portion of this word means old wound while ‘algia’ means pain. So, the fact that this words means longing for the past with a happy feeling blows my mind. I do not understand how people came up with the definition of this word, but I wish I was in the room with the person who did. Nostalgia is something that people can feel and not just say. There are not many words like this. There are so many objects, songs and so much more that can make you feel this word. A certain scent can remind a person of their high school lover and they can long to be back in their arms. With the feeling of nostalgia, the person is assumed to have a feeling of happiness or even a little smile on their face but, this is not always true. A memory that goes hand in hand with nostalgia is usually not a happy memory. People yearn to be back to simpler and better days or events and become overwhelmed because they realize they can ever go back to that time. Even if the said person tried to recreate the simpler times, they would just get caught up in the chaos and have the nostalgia feeling become even more
