In the story “Seventh Grade,” Victor, the main character, learned that he should not deceive people to acquire through his embarrassing moments. This occurred when the protagonist stated, “La me vave me con le grandma” (Soto). Even though Victor tried to impress Teresa by sounding Frenchy, his teacher’s reaction made he realized that his attempt to impress Teresa was a total failure when he noticed his teacher’s expression. Consequently, Victor felt extremely bitter and quietly swallowed his humble pie. The essay is informal and written in everyday language. The writer’s purpose is to inspire anyone, who encounter any obstacles that they may combat in life.
Imagine moving to a different country without speaking the language spoken there fluently. Without being able to fully understand other people, it makes it impossible to feel comfortable. In Me Talk Pretty One Day, Sedaris wants his audience to realize that learning a language doesn’t happen with a couple classes. Learning a language takes time, and hunger of wanting to learn it. Him moving to France to learn French, was a drastic change not many would take.
Everyone knows the grown-ups in Charlie Brown and a person 's struggle listening to their incomprehensible murmurs. This is exactly how David Sedaris feels in his story "Me Talk Pretty One Day" while trying to learn French. Not only is Sedaris trying to learn a foreign language but he also has traveled to a foreign place to learn it: Paris. The consistent, sarcastic tone of Sedaris ' story adds humor to what is actually a stressful sounding event.
In relation to David Sedaris’s life in The Ship Shape, I am able to relate to his uncertainty with his parents. When I was younger, my mother married a man who fell into that category of false hope, everything he said would echo into a strange abyss and never come back. He would constantly spend our family’s money on himself and his friends. No matter what, In the end he was a nobody and no-one could make him a better person. In my time living as a kid in California, I experienced the betrayal and false hope, just as David Sedaris in The Ship Shape.

Sedaris goal in writing Me Talk Pretty One day is that learning French and living in a foreign country as an older adult is both difficult and rewarding. Through hard work and extensive studying he eventually starts to understand what his teacher is telling him. “And it struck me that, for the first time since arriving in France, I could understand every word that someone was saying.” (Sedaris) I agree with Sedaris in his claim that learning something new can be difficult and rewarding.
Since the beginning of time humans have needed to be keen to their surroundings to survive, which means that we have to seek out environments with certain advantages. Our interactions with people have an effect on the way human perceive life.
