Prior to the Industrial Revolution, in the 16th century, developments within the scientific world were made, this was known as the Scientific Revolution. Developments were made in mathematics, physics, astronomy, and more. These ideas changed the way people viewed science and made room for new innovations which would impact the future. Although the Industrial Revolution had its positive effects, more negative effects came from it, these included, a growing wealth gap between the rich and the poor, disease and contamination, and harsh working conditions. The Industrial Revolution had many negative effects, one being the extreme wealth gap that existed between the poor and the rich. Document 1 is an excerpt from the book “The Working Man’s Companion” by Charles Knight, with its purpose being to inform workers on the benefits of industrialization. It explains how if it weren't for the Industrial Revolution, these comforts such as cheap clothes, better houses, domestic utensils, and cheap and quick travel would not surround these men. These are all positive effects that came from the Industrial Revolution. The steam engine is just one invention from the Industrial Revolution but it had a huge and long-lasting impact on how people lived. The steam engine was created in 1712, it was a machine that converted steam energy into motion. The steam engine was used in a variety of different things like factories, ships, and trains. Due to the steam engine, people were able to travel quicker and cheaper on ships and trains which improved life overall. Knight, as the author of “The Working Man’s Companion” wrote about the comforts and convenience brought by the Industrial Revolution because he wanted workers to realize that because of the Industrial Revolution, their life was improved and there was no need for political
Because of providing the unprivileged with these jobs, many began to consider the Industrial Revolution a dreadful stage in history. According to the long-term results of the outcomes however, this issue had played an exceptional role during the period of time for three precise reasons. Firstly, modern society greatly advanced in various ways. Secondly, advanced factories in addition to machines were soon to be in the
The new factory system allowed products to be more widely available to the public. The price dropped due to the increase of production and now even the lower classes in society could afford these mass produced products. “You are surrounded… with an infinite number of comforts and conveniences which had no existence two or three centuries ago and those comforts are not used only by a few, but are within the reach of almost all men.” (Document 4) Document 4 demonstrates the idea of how things products that didi’t exist previously was able to be in the hands of whoever wanted it. Another positive affect of the Industrial Revolution was how there were many more jobs available within society.
Things such as environmental degradation, exploitation of the workforce, inequality of income, and overcrowding were the result of industrialization time. This revolution brought out the weaknesses in many countries when it came to the poverty or wealth of people, leaving a small amount of the population in the middle of those 2 extremes. Document 2 states, “Generally speaking, the strength or weakness of a country is dependent on the wealth or poverty of its people, and the people's wealth or poverty derives from the number of available products.” This quote explains how the industrial period is connected to people and the country's stability. Factors like unequal income and exploitation of their workforce play a major role in the growth of the country’s development.
The Industrial Revolution’s effects can be argued either way for the better or the worse. Many people have their different opinions. While some might argue that Industrialization had primarily negative effects for the society because of the horrendous living and hazardous working conditions, it was actually a positive thing for the society. Industrialization’s positive effects included economic growth, new inventions that increased productivity, and a higher standard of living helped people live better and more efficiently.
As Document D states, these advances have led to men and women living more comfortably and less stressed out economically. Machinery wasn’t the only form of technology that improved during the Industrial Revolution, there were also advancements in communication. Document E shows telegraph lines that spanned across entire continents, which was a major achievement at the time because you no longer needed to send someone off across land/sea to deliver a single
According to The Working Man's Companion, “Your houses are built better, your clothes are cheaper, you have an infinite number of domestic utensils” (8). This quote explains that due to the Industrial Revolution goods and services became cheaper and more efficient since factories were able to mass produce them. In addition, The Working Man's Companion also stated, “You can travel cheaply from place to place, and not only travel at less expense, but travel ten times quicker that two hundred years ago” (8). This excerpt is demonstrating how the Industrial Revolution also impacted transportation by transforming horse-drawn wagons to steam powered locomotives, which improved trade and created jobs. However, some of the conditions the people experienced were unnecessary.
The effects of the Industrial Revolution on Great Britain were more negative due to the inventions, social issues, and economics. The Industrial Revolution was a long slow process that changed the way goods were made. This could mean both negative and positive changes but one is lead to believe that the negative effects outweigh the positive effects. The Industrial Revolution brought many great machines (Inventions) to man that made lengthy projects less time consuming, but with a price. Society in England had a major change in how many families went to the mills to work long and harsh hours in the factories with penny wages each hour.
The Industrial Revolution in Britain had both positive and negative long-term effects on the economy. Positive long-term effects include: Economic Growth: The Industrial Revolution created a tremendous amount of wealth in Britain and helped transform it into the world's leading economic power. This growth continued for over a century and helped to establish Britain as a major industrial nation. Technological Advancements: The Industrial Revolution also led to significant technological advancements that allowed for faster and more efficient production of goods.
Effects of the Industrial Revolution The Industrial Revolution was an important event in history. It brought about many positives during its time. For instance, kids were well fed, educated, and clothed. There were plenty of negatives, as well. One very sad example was the machine injuries that happened to both children and adults.
The Industrial Revolution proved to have a more positive effect overall. One beneficial aspect of this revolution were the multitude of new jobs and more job opportunities. An excerpt from document 1, stated “I am at work in a spinning room tending four sides of the warp which is one girl’s work... The factory is the best place for me and if any girl wants
The Industrial Revolution, plentiful with inventions and cultural changes, took the world by storm providing new technologies that had never been seen nor even imagined of before. Among the most successful inventors, James Watt invented the ever influential Steam Engine. The Steam Engine had numerous effects on culture, but extraordinary effects on specifically employment and standard of living. As a result of the new invention, thousands of jobs were created for people throughout The United Kingdom, subsequently increasing the standard of living greatly. The steam engine created so many jobs because of the demand for coal.
“The Steam engine, the cotton spinning machinery, and the manufacture of iron with coal and coke deserve their renown, for invention on this scale wan unprecedented, and it inaugurated an era of industrial expansion and further technological innovation that changed the world”. In the early 1800’s people lived in the countryside as women and men worked as predominantly farmers, but during the mid-1800’s new machines that used steam and coal were able to produce goods at a massive scale. This is known as the Industrial Revolution. This revolution started in Europe, mainly Britain, and expanded to the entire world.
One of the most important technologies used during the industrial age was the steam engine. In the 1760’s, the steam engine became relevant when James Watt made improvements to the design of the first engine created by Thomas Newcomen in 1712, who had also improved on the first steam pump created by Thomas Savery in 1689. After Watt manage to complete the final design it went into the usage of other products. The use of the steam-powered railways and ships made it easier to transport both people and goods from merchants. It also allowed to increase the power of factories as many would switch from water-mills or wind-mills to steam power.
The steam engine, essentially, came to be the “energy” that later powered the most “advanced textile inventions” like the spinning mule and the power loom (Cleary 33). Additionally, it “revolutionized” transportation for the rest of Britain when it was “applied” to later inventions such as the steam locomotive invented by British engineer Richard Trevithick and the steamship invented by American Robert Fulton in the early 1800s (Cleary 33). All of these new inventions came to harness the steam engine in one way or another and were able to become more efficient and a lot more powerful, which would inevitably change the way technology, machinery and mass production would work in the years to
A major debate among Historians is if the Industrial Revolution was helpful or harmful. The industrial revolution created a big change in the society of America. It was an age of innovation and creativeness for the inventors of the world. It was an age of sorrow and despair for the workers of the world.
