Charles B. Dew argued in his book “Southern Secession Commissioners and the Cause of the Civil War” that the south seceded to protect the slaves. He also stated the north had larger military forces compared to the south. That southerners fought because of their pride and that is why the war lasted for four years (322). Mississippi, Alabama, South Carolina, Georgia, and Louisiana wanting to get out of the Union and become one of their own. The lower southern states persuaded many other slave state to secede from the Union as well.
In conclusion, the secession of the eleven states was not very successful. As we know today, there are fifty states in America, one of which is Texas. There were many outcomes to this decision, and not all benefited Texas. When the Civil War ended the North came out as the victor. After this the North set forth many plans to allow Texas back into the Union, however some were too easy and others too difficult for the South to accept.
The Confederate states seceded because they believed that their rights as American citizens were being mistreated by the
I think that Texas should secede from the Union because of slavery, states' rights, and secession. Slavery and states' rights were definitely the two main reasons, but secession was also another reason. Slavery was very important to Texas because the farmers needed workers to grow and harvest their crops. I don't think that slavery was very relevant to Texas' secession because in document A, during 1860 the percentage of families that owned slaves in Texas was only 29%, which wasn't a lot compared to some other Southern states. Although the population of slaves in Texas wasn't as much compared to some other states, slavery was still important for the economy.
South Carolina was not agreeing with the plans Abraham Lincoln would bring up, such things as equality and civil right for African American citizen were not in mind and South Carolina was strongly opposing that. Following this the state of South Carolina was trying to become part of the Confederacy, which happened on February 4, 1861. Being the first state to do so they were not unfollowed, because shortly after the states of Mississippi, Florida, Texas and Georgia
This one was without a doubt the most important reason. The South had a huge success with selling cotton and people often owned huge plantations. The people who owned the farms hired slaves to farm and collect the cotton, that way they could make their cash. (Document A.)The North however wanted to abolish, or get rid of slavery. Fearful of losing their businesses, Texans decided to fight.
Secondly the south wanted to leave the union because Uncle Tom’s Cabin was published. In document 4 it states “She wrote this book to show that slavery was evil and that the Fugitive Slave Law was unjust. This would convince or show how evil and wrong slavery is and more people would want to abolish slavery. If they didn’t secede they would lose slavery. So to stop people in the South to be convinced that slavery is wrong the South left the union.
The North didn 't like earning less money than the South, so they taxed the South. Anytime a Southerner wanted to export their goods, they had a pay a large tariff. The Southerners felt they were being treated like colonies with no real say in anything. So they did what had to be done, they seceded. Here 's why the south was justified...
The South was completely unjustified for seceding from the North. This is because of slavery being unconstitutional, the South’s dependence on the North, and the fact that so few wanted slavery. Slavery was completely unconstitutional. For example, according to document 9, “(T)he fifth amendment to the Constitution...provides that no person shall be deprived of life, liberty, and property without due process of law...which prohibited a citizen from holding and owning property of this kind (slaves)...” These are exact words from the Constitution stating that slavery is illegal and “prohibited” under law.
The south was not willing to give up their right of slavery. Due to the constant battle over slavery, the south seceded from the union and created their own nation. During the war, different battles were fought on the basis of slavery and
Tensions rose across the country from those in support support of slavery and those opposed. Many states wanted to outlaw slavery while others adamantly defended it because it was the main institution with a high and consistent revenue. Ultimately, the disagreements over slavery are what lead to the Civil War. The country divided into an “Us versus Them” situation which lead to both sides having growing support for their views and making the groups less susceptible to an agreement. In 1862, President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation which freed slaves from confederate states.
The South has had many problems but I believe many of them could have been solved faster if we were allowed to secede. The North stopped us from seceding though, so we will never know. Secession has been around for centuries but when the South tried to do it, it was seen as unconstitutional. The South had many good reasons to secede. For example, it would have benefited both the North and the South, it would have stopped the Civil War from happening, and even though many people say the South wasn’t at a place to make its own decisions I think we would have been fine.
‘Slavery was the root cause of secession’. ‘November 6 1860, Lincoln was elected president of America which resulted in panic emerging in the South’ . The election of Lincoln as president who was a Republican leader meant that ideologies, movements and values from the North would be implemented in the South which meant the abolition of slavery. Slavery was a huge characteristic of the South as the economy; politics; social status and psychological mind-sets were influenced by the process of slavery. The southern white population then derived the idea of secession which meant the South would gain independence from Northern aggression .
The Civil War resulted due to the division and the gradual collapse of the Union between the two sections. It can be argued that both the North and South were distinct regions. However, both regions initially displayed nationalism in various ways at the beginning of the Civil War. Southern nationalism allowed the Confederates to justify their secession and independence. The formation of the Confederacy and the established Confederate Constitution in February 1861, nationalism validated their status as an independent country.
There were many reasons that the civil war happened and they all tied together to make one big
