The purpose of this study is to understand the feeding rate of Daphnia magna. D. magna is a species of Daphnia that belongs to the suborder Cladocera (Ebert, 2005). They live in freshwater and feed on small, suspended particles in the surrounding water. They are filter feeders. Through the deaf eyes is a film about what is like to be deaf; it also tells us about the history, as well as challenges deaf culture has faced. It speaks about Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet and Laurent Clerc the creators of the first school for the deaf, also deaf clubs, and people today who have changed perspectives of the deaf community. Annotated Bibliography: Deafness/Disability - problematising notions of identity, culture and structure In the essay, “Deafness/Disability - problematising notions of identity, culture and structure, Mairian Corker focuses on the tension between Deaf and disabled people. As Corker analyzes the division between Deaf and disabled people she reflects on Margaret Archer’s views. Corker explains that Margaret Archer viewed “ the structural (‘parts’) and cultural (‘people’) domains are substantively different, as well as being relatively autonomous from each other” (Corker 2002). Throughout her essay Corker talks about the different theories in Deaf studies and disability studies to explain the same issues.
The book I chose to read was the book Deaf in America by Carol Padden and Tom Humphries. I chose this book because I know several people that are deaf and wanted to learn more about the Deaf culture. A family friend of mine comes from a Deaf family, and I was interested in learning more about what exactly that meant. At first, I expected this book to be about certain people that were deaf and their specific experiences. However, I was surprised to learn more about the Deaf community as a society, with deaf people sharing a similar culture just like hearing people.
Inside Deaf Culture Inside deaf culture is a very strong book written by carol Padden and tom Humphries in this book authors have tried to give a tour of the most important moments that has shaped the Deaf culture. At Columbine High School there had been a massacre on April 20, 1999. Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold were the two shooters from the Columbine massacre. After that day there had been many rumors and myths about the shooting from the media and from people. After the shooting at Columbine there had been many rumors and myths from news reporters saying the shooters were only targeting jocks but really Eric and Dylan were just trying to kill of whoever they saw.
Working with my students has brought me the greatest sense of joy and has helped me grow in ways I never imagined. The past five years has allowed me to grow close with my students, especially with one student in particular. My relationship with this student is one that is both motivational and personally touching. This student has Down syndrome, as did my late aunt; I found myself immediately connected to this student. He had unintelligible speech, which resulted in a great deal of frustration.
At the same time, I was admitted into the Special Education credential program at my university. I unquestionable, wanted to touch people’s lives in different ways. In the summer of 2007, I worked at a visually impaired camp as a Lead Female Counselor. As a leader, I actively supervised the counselors under my care as well as the campers. I solved problems and collaborated with the team (staff, director) to create fun activities for the campers.
According to Cristina De Rossi, an anthropologist at Barnet and Southgate College in London, “Culture encompasses religion, food, what we wear, how we wear it, our language, marriage, music, what we believe is right or wrong, how we sit at the table, how we greet visitors, how we behave with loved ones, and million other things.” I think basically culture expresses the ways we live. Every region, every family and everyone has their own culture. For example, people usually call “Western Culture,” “Eastern Culture,” “Latin Culture,” or “African Culture” etc. Therefore, with Deaf people, they also have their own culture, which is Deaf Culture.
As an addition to my education background, some of my other qualification that will allow me to qualify for your program is my passion for making a difference within the deaf community. My ability to talk out about the issue surrounding the Deaf community throughout my advocacy as a …. I have gone to many events surrounding the different ways in which the Deaf community needs helps. I will soon hold a Bachelor degree in Communication Disorders and my studies have taught me how to communicate with individuals from all backgrounds, professions, and social classes. It taught me sympathy and understanding of human interaction. My long term goal is to work with school aged children and young adults as a speech-language pathologist. I have experience in interacting favorably and effectively with children of a wide range and enjoy doing so. I belong in an educational environment and would like to continue on to the school system and contribute to the success of school aged children and young adults.
As well as the challenge of many professionals encouraging put in hearing aids, making their child “hearing impaired”. Hearing parents are usually unsure of what to do, and end up following the path the professionals recommend. The book really helps emphasize the importance of not doing that. Instead, exposing a the child into the Deaf community would be the best option. They’ll be welcomed with wide arms, and it will help them feel most true to themselves.
