Thompson evidently signifies a good Samaritan in the case of the destitute Maggie who had lost all hope. Such a timely intervention by a man is very inspiring. On the contrary it looks strange that none of the women were touched out their feminine hearts. No matter what their in differences were, God never abandoned this poor girl. Several incidences led Jane to slowly change her mind and open her heart and arms to Maggie such as: Joe impressively quoting Jesus’s wonderful attitude to children and how he urged his disciples to do the same, and they too being invited to do the same. These he communicated accompanied with: “The voice of the strong rough man shock, and he turned his head away , so that moisture in his eyes might not be seen. Mrs. Thompson did not answer, but a soft feeling crept into her heart” (5).Had Thompson used tough language toward his wife he would not have made such a transformed response. He knew the type of woman he has, how hard hearted she is. So he technically plotted out what would move her to being charity. Indeed the man’s captivating words and gestures penetrated her heart to a positive change. Definitely this was conversion on the part of Jane Thompson shown by her response: “We’ll keep her a day or two; she is so weak and helpless,” said Mrs. Joe Thompson, in answer to her husband’s remark, at breakfast- time on the next morning, that he must step down and see the Guardian of the poor about Maggie” (9). The excellent delay tactics of Mr. Joe and his gentle communication has worked a miracle to break the formerly unloving hardened heart of Mrs. Joe.
