Capital punishment has always been a topic that has divided Americans for numerous decades. Capital punishment, also referred to as the death penalty, is a government-sanctioned practice where a person is put to death by the state as a punishment for a crime. Many people feel that this style of punishment is horrific and cruel, while some people believe that it is crucially needed. People against the death penalty believe that know one should have the right to take another person's life. while, people in agranice with the death penalty believe that this style of punishment is needed to deter citizens from committing crimes, such as murder. Currently there are thirty-three states that allow the death penalty, and seventeen which don’t allow it. Many people see cost as an issue because, the average cost of the death penalty is $740,000. Taxpayers find this as a problem because, there tax dollars are being used to pay for these executions. Taxpayers believe that it would cost less for a convict to spend the rest of their lives in prison rather than executing them. Taxpayers advocates for convicts to spend their life in prison to save money. On the other hand, people in favor of the death penalty, believe that the expense of execution is worth it.
