After reading “The Lottery” (1948) by Shirley Jackson, many people may find it hard to not compare the article to our modern day “Death penalty or suicide bombing”… The story starts in a small town with only 300 residence, people has gather together on June 27 to do the lottery, which had a great weather turn out; since it was a beautiful day out. To prepare for the lottery parents and their children all fill their pockets with stones and pebbles, Mr. Summers is in charge of conducting the lottery because he is the town helper and have a lot of extra time and Mr. Graves serves as the postmaster. The night before the lottery; Mr. Graves and Mr. Summers made a bunch of paper slips but with one that has a black dot the night before the lottery, they keep all the slips in a black box which you would expect to be quiet scruffy but what is rather interesting …show more content…

Now that Mrs. Hutchinson has arrived, Mr. Summers ask if anyone is not present and everyone quickly realized that Mr. Dunbar is not there and is home with a broken leg but since Mr. Dunbar does not have a son that is old enough to take over, so his wife had to take his spot. Now the lottery can finally start and Mr. Summers starts to go over the rules of the lottery with the villagers. Mr. Summers start calling people up one by one to pick a slip, now everyone has open their slips and people assumed that Bill Hutchinson has the defective slip but Mrs. Hutchinson argued that it was not fair due to the fact that bill did not have enough to pick his paper. Mr. Summers has no choice but to move on with the process, so Mr. Graves empty out the box and put a piece of paper for everyone in the Hutchinson’s family which was five
