Nancy Isenberg, an American historian interested on “gender and politics, cultural and legal history in the U.S”, currently teaches at the Louisiana State University. Isenberg received awards and honors for her notables works. Analytical and detail oriented Nancy Isenberg published White Trash: The 400-Year Untold History of Class in America, which received a nomination for Goodreads Choice Awards Best History & Biography. “Living near the Swamp, they suffered from “distempers of laziness,” which made the slothful in everything but getting children.
Tera W. Hunter is a scholar of U. S. history, with specializations in African-Americans, gender, labor, and the South. She is particularly interested in the history of slavery and freedom. She is currently writing a book on African-American marriages in the nineteenth century. Her first book received several prizes including the H. L. Mitchell Award from the Southern Historical Association, the Letitia Brown Memorial Book Prize from the Association of Black Women’s Historians, and the Book of the Year Award from the International Labor History Association. She was a Mary I. Bunting Institute Fellow, at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard University, 2005-2006.
In the book Ar’n’t I a women the author, Deborah Gray White, explains how the life was for the slave women in the Southern plantations. She reveals to us how the slave women had to deal with difficulties of racism as well as dealing with sexism. Slave women in these plantations assumed roles within the family as well as the community; these roles were completely different to the roles given to a traditional white female. Deborah Gray White shows us how black women had a different experience from the black men and the struggle they had to maintain their sense of womanhood against all odds, resist sexual oppression, and keep their families together. Gender, Race, and Rank in a Revolutionary Age, was written by Betty Wood and surveys the diverse groups of women around the time of the revolutionary era. Dr. Betty Wood is a prominent scholar and has written many articles and books in the specific areas of early American and African American history in the colonial and revolutionary era Lowcountry. Because women’s history during that era is not well documented, her analysis of early American women during the revolutionary era is important. This book shows how women were linked by gender but divided by their race and social positions; it survey’s how their race and social standings affected their relations and encounters with each other during the fast growth of a slave based plantation society.
The Critical Race Theory was developed by a group of feminist scholars who studied the ways “racism and sexism helped to create and reinforce a power structure that historically privileged white males had over other Americans”. In the past 20 years, critical race theorists have used slave history to prove how a negative image of black women has persisted. It is the opinion of many respected scholars that the Critical Race Theory is difficult to define with simple examples. Two female scholars Derrick Bell and Darlene Clark Hine gave detailed examples to clarify their claims that race and gender played a major role in how CRT scholars were able to demonstrate why slave owners created the “jezebel” and “mammy” stereotypes. The “jezebel” was a term that implied a black female slave was a primitive creature with uncontrollable sex urges which caused innocent white slave owners to lose self-control.
Such a bold move could have resulted in her being lynched just as the victims as her expose’ had been. However, Wells gains credibility by including the opinion of northern whites in her work. There was “an almost divine sentiment among the noblest, purest, and best white women of the North, who felt called to a mission to educated and Christianize the millions of southern ex-slaves” and these women testified that they never had problems with the ex-slaves (Wells 681). While the African American men were being accused of raping white women, the northern women, who spent much time with the African American men, “never complained of assaults and no mob was ever called into existence to avenge crimes against” these women (Wells 681). Early American social hierarchies differed markedly for women of color—whether free or enslaved—whose relationships to the white regimes of early America were manifold and complex. The excerpt I chose to reflect on is called “An End to the Neglect of the Problems of the Negro Woman!” by Claudia Jones (1949). Jones express the concerns that women of color in her time suffer from the neglect and degradation they receive throughout their lives. During this time, the reason many African American women go through the struggles in their community originated from the notion that the “bourgeoisie is fearful of the militancy of the Negro woman” (108). In my opinion, they have every right to be afraid of African American women. As Jones stated nicely "once Negro women undertake action, the militancy of the whole Negro people, and thus of the anti-imperialist coalition, is greatly enhanced" (108).

Her novels especially lend themselves to feminist readings because of the ways in which they challenge the cultural norms of gender, slavery, race, and class. In addition to that, Morrison novels discuss the experiences of the oppressed black minorities in isolated communities. The dominant white culture disables the development of healthy African-American women self image and also she pictures the harsh conditions of black women, without separating them from the oppressed situation of the whole minority. In fact, slavery is an ancient and heinous institution which had adverse effects on the sufferers at both the physical as well as psychological levels.
