Deception is a powerful tool, and in the wrong hands, can steer everything in the direction of complete chaos. Deception is particularly dangerous to those who aren’t as smart as those who seem to be deceiving them, because they honestly can’t tell whether or not they are being misled. This is how the pigs stayed in power with hardly anyone questioning their motives. None of the other animals on the farm realized they were being played. After the successful revolution, the pigs began to build their new government. The seven commandments were put in place as the new guidelines to the animal’s lives on the farm. Just by assuming they owned the position to be the “leaders” of Animal Farm already breaks the commandment that “All animals are equal”. They use their deceptive nature, and Squealer, to convince the other animals that it is imperative that the pigs drink the milk and eat all of the windfalls because “Milk and apples contain substances absolutely necessary to the well-being of a pig. We pigs are brainworkers. The whole management and organization of this farm depend on us.” (Chapter 3, page 23). This, once again, breaks the animal equality rule. Later on, the pigs break one of the rules and sends the entire point of the commandments into a downward spiral. Snowball and Napoleon started to fight over their power, and eventually Napoleon tried to kill Snowball. Snowball got away, but that doesn’t mean the rule that “No animal shall kill another animal” (Chapter 2, page 15) wasn’t broken. Next, it was the pigs sleeping in beds. Squealer reassured the animals that they hadn’t broken any rules by saying “You did not suppose, surely, that there was ever a ruling against beds? A bed is merely a place to sleep in… The rule was against sheets, which are a human invention.” (Chapter 6, page 46.) Soon, Napoleon was trading with the other farmers and even drinking alcohol.
