Women wanted the right to vote because they wanted their voices to be heard within the government and to become more equal to men. A petition was created to show that many women wanted and would benefit from their right to vote. An excerpt from the Declaration of Sentiments shows that the inequality between men and women is greater without women’s right to vote. It may seem that the right to vote for women will only benefit women, but in reality, it will create a larger variety of voters, helping to build diversity. To show how many women needed the right to vote, a petition was created. 12 women created a petition on behalf of the women in America to give them the right to vote. The Declaration of Sentiments was created to show the imbalance between genders. The Declaration helps show how even though men and women are created equal, one has the right to create rules that the other has to follow blindly. Not giving the right to vote to women makes them “submit to laws” in which they have “no voice,” even though “the most ignorant and degraded men” have the right (Stanton). These ignorant and degraded men who have the right to vote aren’t better than the women or smarter by any means, so why should they have the right to vote? Some arguments could be made that the right to vote for women only benefits women, but everyone benefits from more people voting. It may seem that giving women the right to vote only benefits them, but it benefits all of us as it adds more perspectives and diversity to the vote.
