During the late 1800s and early 1900s, Progressive reformers worked to improve the social, political, and economic problems in American society. Throughout this time, muckrakers helped reformers by revealing injustices to Americans through journalism, books, campaigns, photographs, and political cartoons. Poor working conditions, low quality of consumer products, and inferior democracy were present in American life during the Progressive Era; reforms such as state actions, the Meat Inspection Act, and Direct Primary helped to eliminate these corruptions. Prior to 1890 to 1920, it marked a significant period of political change in the nation. Progressives implemented several changes at the municipal, state, and federal levels. They were led by reform-minded people who addressed the political, social, and economic injustices of the Gilded Era. A push for social and political reform, the emergence of numerous grassroots organizations, and political initiatives targeted at resolving the social and economic issues confronting the US were the hallmarks of this age.
In a time where suffering took place to gain suffrage, women were willing to make any sacrifice necessary to achieve equality. In America during the 20th century, tensions were high between many societal groups and classes. During that time, justice and equality were familiar yet misunderstood concepts to many Americans, and change was forthcoming. Societal change is the shift from night to day, and from day back to night; unavoidable and frequent. One such unavoidable change was the suffrage for all genders, races, religions, and free peoples in the United States of America.

Beginning in the late 19th Century, the Gilded Age was a historic period of time characterized by political corruption and angry sentiment towards government. As citizens of the United States became increasingly discontent about the current state of the nation, they started to express this anger in the form of reform movements. Leading up to the Progressive Era movements were various social, economic, and political concerns that revolved around political leaders failing to meet the needs of people. The rise of the Progressive Reform movements in the years 1870-1917 was largely influenced by conflict in the working class, governmental influence of big business, and the absence of civil rights for many American citizens.
Largely in reaction to the Industrial Revolution, the middle and upper class citizens of the United States saw a need of immediate reform with the hope of getting rid of monopolies and political corruption. Determined to make the nation more democratic while taking advantage of the Capital System based on competition between companies, the Progressive Era came into play, highlighted by rust-busting, political reform and social improvements. Although success was limited, the progressive movement had changed the whole nation’s landscape: with the effort of the tireless reformers and the federal government, the nation saw an economy with more competitions, a better working and living condition provided for the workers; with people more involved
In the year of 1873, Susan B. Anthony had been arrested for casting an illegal vote at the last presidential election. This time period was known as the Women’s Rights Movement. Many women had began to acknowledge that they were treated unfair by society’s standards against them, and had began to stand up for themselves and their fellow women. At this time, women were not allowed to vote. Most were stay-at-home mothers because men did not find them suitable for most jobs the men accommodated, and society discouraged them from even getting a real education.
During the time of the Progressive Era in 1900s-1920s, the majority of the American believed that the industrialization, immigration, and the urbanization had produced critical social disorders and believes that reforms were needed to be reshaped America. They also believed that it was time to eliminate the problem caused by the corruption in the government and promote the improvement in order to address the social and economic problems. People like Theodore Roosevelt and W.E.B.Du Bois also accepted that change was needed to improve and develop. The major changes were made in social, economic and political reforms. But, was the Progressive Era a success?

At the head of this period of political development was the Progressive movement. The progressive movement guided political change in the united states of America from 1890-1920 by fostering the two most significant factors behind political change: giving minorities a voice and prioritizing “the people” and their power in government.
In the 1800’s women were treated differently than men in an important duty as a citizen, voting rights. However one big conflict during this time was women fighting for their right to vote as only men could vote earlier in the 1800’s. The reason these women fought so hard, was to be considered a citizen and given equal rights that men had. A huge population would not be able to vote for basic rights, as well as for their president. Moreover, most of these women fighting were tired second class citizens only asking to be treated equal to the men.
They were oftentimes referred to as the “moral guardians”. Women of the progressive era united to fight against racism, raise wages, and improve the working condition of female workers. It was both of these classes of women working together that were the driving force behind change and reformation in the progressive era. Women in the Progressive Era accomplished much significant reorganization. They had achieved many victories, but perhaps the sweetest of these triumphs was the passage of the 19th Amendment, which won women’s suffrage.
Objections to Woman Suffrage Women’s suffrage was the largest reform movement and this movement brought a lot of change for women and everyone in America. Women for many years faced so many obstacles from inequality. They were faced with restrictions in labor, they were unable to have certain occupations, and they were also unable to vote. There were many objections to women’s suffrage, however, women and their accomplishments and integrity answered and gave the reasoning behind them all. In other countries, women suffrage brought good change to their country.
First of all, the progressive era which took place on the period of 1890 to 1920 was an important part,, positive and negative, in the history of the United States which at the moment it main ideals were to destroy the corruption in the government and create a more stable government that could work for the American people and much more less work for the rich. Some of the important things that were created and given were the right to women to vote which did not include people of color and much more less women of color because they were considered less than a human being and not worth of this so called privilege. For nearly one hundred and fifty years, The United States of America claimed to be made “By the people, for the People” but denied the most basic rights to half of the population. Women were seen by American society as second-class citizens, existing exclusively to assist others and be subservient to men. Many women during this time did not agree on this topic and choose to fight back against the patriarchy. Women like this just wanted to have the same respect as any other man in society. The women who fought back were largely associated with the National Women Suffrage Association.
The Progressive Era was an important time period from 1890s-1920s in American History was when the United States needed to change things up to improve the American culture. It was believed that the problems they faced, such as poverty, violence, racism, etc., could be fixed by providing good education, a efficient workplace, and a safe environment. Although one could say that the progressives were unsuccessful at changing their goals, they really were successful because the rights of the women changes, and the views on the working conditions increased. The change in women’s rights was one of the biggest successes in the Progressive Era.
