In nursing, a significant amount of professionalism is required when working with patients and their families. In addition, ethical principles and moral values are dynamic and appropriate attributes which a nurse needs to implement in order to ensure quality and standard healthcare service delivery. These type of nurses work at nursing homes, with home healthcare services and in hospice facilities, or run your own private practice. A geriatric nurse work with finding illnesses and diseases, prescribing medication and therapy, routine check-ups and screenings, etc…etc.
In nursing programs throughout the United States, there are various nursing philosophies with different emphasis on multiple beliefs. After exploring Immaculata University’s nursing philosophy, I concluded that it coincides with my own nursing philosophy with a focus on assisting individuals by promoting, restoring, maintain health, and to assisting them to die with dignity. Although the nursing philosophy is similar to mine, I believe that nursing philosophy consists of having compassion, professionalism, and providing safe care. Compassion is an important component of promoting the health of the individual.
It is the person and their physical, emotional, and psychological needs that are the basic focus of nursing’s attention. In order to care for a patient, the nurse must incorporate all these needs. For example, providing reassurance with an anxious patient who just finished hip surgery. Care also plays a major part when taking care of a unique patient. Caring influences my personal philosophy because it is the most important aspect of nursing.

Christian nurses are given the unique ability to provide compassionate and spiritual care to a variety of patients. The purpose of this paper is to explain my definition of nursing as a caring art, describe how Christian faith impacts caring, describe my personal philosophy of nursing while identifying my own personal values and beliefs, and discus how my beliefs impact my nursing practice. To me, nursing as an art of caring, is defined as caring for the whole person, building meaningful relationships, and providing compassionate care. Holistic nursing care involves healing a person physically, emotionally, and spiritually. I believe the art of nursing is embedded in the steps we take to address problems that are not simply physical.
Every nursing, in order to consider the profession must have an understanding of at least three of the five professional values, in my opinion. These values consist of altruism, autonomy, human dignity, integrity and social justice (Taylor 96). Beginning with the professional value of Altruism, the believe in or practice and self concern for the well-being of others (96). I believe that in order to be the best nurse you can be for your patients, you must understand the concept of altruism. As a nurse, your profession is to take care of people, if you do not know the professional value of altruism than you cannot possibly understand how important it is to care about the wellbeing of your patient.
At the simplest level professionalism with patients comes down to expectations, intentions and perceptions. Patient expectations are preconceived ideas of how they feel they should be treated when in the healthcare setting. When nurses have clear, purposeful intentions that meet those expectations this result in high patient satisfaction. Consequently, the patient leaves the facility perceiving that they have been cared for professionally. When you act professional you communicate that you have assumed the professional helping role, you are clinically skilled, and your focus is on the patient.
In order to encompass a good working environment, professionalism is very important. Professionalism is a characteristic of productive workplace. In the profession of nursing, each nurse has to display a certain degree of respect and responsibilities to meet the standard values of caring. Professionalism is critical in health care.
Compassion to me means you care about something or someone you love deeply. It means that you emotions and strong feelings about the things you care about. You need someone to love and care about you even when you’re in a bad place or in trouble. You need to help people with their work if they don’t understand what they are doing. You can easily believe in helping and taking care of yourself if those things come your way
The professional nursing values I believe are things you can be taught and some you cannot. Nurses are special individuals who ultimately want to care for and help others as much as they can. I agree with all of these values and believe some I will need to work on myself such as competence, illness prevention and patient education. Others I believe I have based on my experience I have already had while caring for others. Some of the qualities I believe I have include: caring, compassion, dependability, empathy, focusing on the patient- defining quality of life, having a holistic patient centered care, kindness, openness to learning, respect for others their dignity and worth and sensitivity.
There are 5 professional values that are associated with the description of a nurse. The first professional value of nursing is altruism. Altruism can describe someone who is unselfish, concerned, and devoted to helping others in need. The beauty of being a nurse is that nurses are caregivers to all.
9. PROFESSIONAL AUTONOMY IN NURSING Nursing has come a long way from being the hand maidens of the physician to having control over nursing knowledge and practice. It now has two essential ingredients of accountability and autonomy. There is more demand from the nurses now than in the past when all they were expected to do was just to provide comfort and care.
Professionalism is defined as the conduct, aims or qualities that characterize or mark a profession or professional person. The ethical success, influence and workmanship display by someone who values their own reputation. Someone who comprises integrity, accountability, honesty and trustworthy. Professionalism fosters a respectful culture and handles conflicts in an appropriate way.
It is a profession in which teamwork between healthcare providers is essential to provide safe and appropriate care to all patients. I believe that nursing is a profession for me, and will continue to expand my knowledge as a nurse by educating myself, growing from past nursing opportunities, applying knowledge, and learning from patients and their families. My vision is to continue to develop my knowledge and grow as a nurse. As I continue to grow and learn about nursing, I believe that my philosophy will evolve with every new experience and will positively impact the client population. I trust that my philosophy of nursing will have a positive impact on my clients as my goal is to consistently provide competent, safe nursing care to all which is culturally safe.
