What is professionalism in nursing mean? According to Webster’s dictionary professionalism is defined as “the conduct, aims, or qualities that characterize or mark a profession or a professional person.” Nursing is considered a profession because it requires both extensive education and specialized training. It also includes certain core values such as compassion, accountability and self-worth, along with work ethic, attitude, and communication to reach and maintain that status. Compassion is a fundamental part of nursing. Patients want to feel cared for and listened to and whether they feel that way is based on the actions of the nurses.
