Cambridge Dictionary’s definition of hope is “the feeling that something desired can be had or will happen”. Katherine Boo addresses how hope affects the people of Annawadi, a slum near Mumbai, in her book Behind the Beautiful Forevers. Hope may seem irrelevant in places as poor and corrupt, but it inspires Annawadians to follow their dreams of a better life. By encouraging them to chase their goals, hope mainly has a positive impact on the people of Annawadi, but is damaging when given up on.
Similar to Maltby’s results, Lopez concluded that hope was a better indication of productivity than any other factor. On a greater scale, hope has shown to be life-altering. A study by the University of Texas determined that hope can be life-saving. Out of the 800 people they surveyed, “29 percent of people classified as hopeless had died, compared with just 11 percent of the hopeful” (Weir). All of the studies conducted proved how inspiring hope can be.
I believe there is hope in this world for hope is in the small things you do like prepare for the next day , go to school and even live. I say this because to live is one of the hardest things anything to do, life is full of uncertainty and a constant struggle between the organism and the things around it. In the struggle in life, hope is needed for me to continue, to believe
“Don’t lose hope… Have faith in life, a thousand times fate… Help each other. That is the only way to survive.” This is a specific quote relating how hope progressed
Hope is a feeling inside you that makes feel like you can do anything. When you have that feeling you set yourself up for success and it makes you want to live life like a fairytale. The war started at Valley Forge, George Washington made an army that he had hoped for. Then the British came and forced war over them. “The harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph.”
Secondly hope is used mainly to keep spirits high, whether being excited for the prospect of a better future or someone in the group making a speech/joke that fills everyone with hope, hope is a powerful idea that keeps morale high. The hope for a better tomorrow, sometimes confused with the sunk cost fallacy when someone doesn't want to give up on their plan/strategy even though giving up might have more positive outcomes, a hope for a better tomorrow is trying to leave a bad setting/place for a better one with more opportunities/ more positive attributes. A hope for a better tomorrow lets characters keep what little patience they have left and persist in their goals to leave. A hope for a better tomorrow is a common theme throughout all three of the main characters’ perspectives, leaving a bad place to seek refuge in a more stable environment, but is best shown in Isabel's “Fight against the impossible” and Mahmoud's family holding on to their hopes and dreams in Izmir.
Hope can consist of staying positive even through the most calamitous of times, remembering some of your precious memories, and even waiting patiently for good outcomes. Having hope can help you overcome obstacles that you may have thought were unfeasible to surpass. There may be times where hope seems out of your grasps. Yo may even start feeling like there is no point in having hope, but a positive attitude can help a tremendous amount when handling conflict. Having something taken from your grasps makes you want to fight for it, but waiting patiently and having hope can also get the lost item back.
Logos is represented as any logical appeal like facts, stats, numbers that can convince the audience any issue that can be solved. In the article, D’Adderio, Porcu, and Tokay described the following, “IFloodS consist on hundreds of professionals and expanding, involving not just creating artificial clouds, but knowing that the amount of rain that’s falling every year throughout the world is getting larger due to the facts of climate change” (D’Adderio, Porcu, and Tokay). Hope is something everyone has rather it 's hoping to make a team, hoping to get something specific for a holiday, or simply hoping one 's day is good. A survivor has more hope than anyone else they hope to survive, to stay surviving, and for others to survive with them. In the novel, Lord of the flies Ralph has hope that they will be rescued by building a fire, he says to the group “The fire is the most important thing on the island. How can we ever be rescued except by luck, if we don 't keep a fire going?” (Golding 80).
Hope is being able to see that there is light despite all of the darkness. It drives us all. It makes us believe in something even when we think everything is against us. Author Nam Le explores the theme of hope in his short story, The Boat and director John Hill coat in his film, The Road. The author and director explore the theme through character development, scenery, the use of symbols and metaphors also through character behaviours.
Hope can be a driving force in our lives. It can pick up the phone to call that one girl back for a second date. It can move our fingers to type the first few words of a novel. It can push us to do more and be more than we ever thought we could be. On the other hand, hope can be like an opiate.
What is hope? Hope, as defined by the Merriam Webster, means to cherish a desire with anticipation, or to want something to happen or be true. Now for us citizens, what does hope mean? Once we know what hope means for us, the real question follows; is there any hope left for the United States in the future? The United States is suppose to be united, but if you listen to the news or read an article, you will notice that the people are divided.
Hope is alive and can be found in more places than one might expect. In Lisel Mueller’s poem, “Hope”, Mueller uses metaphors to describe hope and show that it can be found in many places. Let’s start with the first stanza. In the first 3 lines of the poem, Mueller describes how hope can sometime “hide” from us. She says that it “(…) hovers in dark corners until the lights are turned on,” showing that hope can seem nowhere to be found sometimes (lines 1-2).
People want to believe that they will survive no matter what and having hope helps with that. These quotes are good examples of hope pushing people till the end. From the quotes, Hope has proven to be a splendid tool to help those in need. Hope can help people through the toughest challenges in life.
