“Everyone hates you”, “no one remembers you”, “you’re not wanted here. Leave”, “what if you died right now? Ha-ha”, “you’re being really annoying right now. Shut up.” Although these may seem like ridiculous and cliché phrases, these are various thoughts that anxiety whispers to a person every hour. What is anxiety? Coming from the Latin words for anxiety and torment, anxiety is defined by Merriam-Webster as “a painful or apprehensive uneasiness of mind usually over an impending or anticipated ill.” Does this really accurately describe anxiety? Does this really describe the countless hours of sleep that people have lost over an “impending or anticipated ill”? Anxiety does more than make people worried. A feeling of uneasiness can simply be dismissed without a second thought, and it is not difficult to dispel, but anxiety is a constant problem for the sufferer. Simple nervousness does not cause a high amount of stress that persists day after day. Words like “restlessness”, “nervousness”, and “agitation” cannot explain anxiety, as it is more than a simple feeling. Instead, anxiety is something that is in the brain. It is something that is born from human irrationality, and it is more serious than people make it out to be.
