An individual’s perspective on the definition of “success” is developed as they grow in their respective society, gain experiences, and make relationships with people that will change them forever. My father spent his entire childhood in a rural town in northern India, and I was born in this same town but moved to America with my family at a very young age. In the context of the differences between myself and my father, the fundamental variances in our upbringing and these societies that we grew to be a part of ultimately resulted in distinct perspectives, independent goals and desires, and the development of uniquely structured mindsets, leading my father to have a more motivated lifestyle than me.

India’s society is ruled by tradition, and emphasizes values like “diligence, family, and culture”, as my father states. He mentions that his family specifically hounded on values like “working hard, learning as much as possible, and staying focused on the ultimate goal: success, so that you can provide for your family”. On the other hand, currently within the society I live in, the main focus is on individual success. We have been exposed to a competitive environment at a young age like the children in India, but our competition focuses on achieving success for ourselves, so that we can live a “happier” life in comparison to others. Indian children, however, are governed by the idea that they need to achieve success in order to uphold tradition and give something back to their families and communities. Because of the different values and the emphasis put on them through society, my father led a more motivated lifestyle, because from the moment he was born he lived in fear of punishment for
